National Weather Service Warns Of ‘Critical Fire’ Conditions In Highway 14 Corridor

Brief critical fire conditions are expected this week along the Highway 14 corridor, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

This is the fifth such alert from the organization since the start of August, and NWS officials indicated these sort of conditions are not atypical for this time of year.

“The fuels are drying out,” said Bonnie Bartling, weather specialist for the National Weather Service’s Los Angeles office. “So with the lack of rain, the grasses start drying and other vegetation isn’t getting any moisture. This continues into the fall season, which is typically really dry until we finally get some rain.”

The notice proved prophetic, as shortly after KHTS spoke with NWS officials Tuesday afternoon, a brush fire briefly broke out in Val Verde before firefighters were able to contain the blaze at four to six acres.

The dry conditions are likely here to stay for the near future, according to NWS officials.

“We still have the opportunity to have the afternoon thunderstorms, but that can lead to some dry lightning strikes,” Bartling said. “We’re in the monsoonal season, more or less, but we’re not seeing a lot of moisture to bring any thunderstorms to our area at this time.”
