Red Flag Warning Issued For Santa Clarita During Thanksgiving Holiday

A Red Flag Warning has been issued for the Santa Clarita Valley, along with most of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties, starting on the afternoon of Thanksgiving Day and lasting into most of the following day.

On Wednesday, officials with the National Weather Service upgraded a previous Fire Weather Watch issued for Los Angeles and Ventura Counties to a Red Flag Warning.

The Red Flag Warning, which includes all of Santa Clarita, is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, and last until 10 p.m. the following Friday.

A major component behind the decision to issue the Red Flag Warning is the winds forecast to take place between Wednesday night and Friday morning, with sustained winds predicted to be as high as 30 mph, and gusts as high as 65 mph.

A Wind Advisory and a High Wind Watch have also been issued for the Santa Clarita Valley, with the first lasting most of Thanksgiving Day, and the second lasting most of the following Friday.

“Moderate to locally strong Santa Ana winds will develop later tonight and Thursday, peak Thursday night through Friday morning, then gradually weaken into Saturday but stay locally breezy through the weekend,” Wednesday’s Fire Weather Watch reads.

In addition to this, humidities are expected to lower sharply Thursday afternoon and evening to 12 to 25 percent, lowering further to 6 to 15 percent for Friday through Sunday.

“If fire ignition occurs, conditions will be favorable for rapid fire spread, long range spotting, and extreme fire behavior which would threaten life and property,” the watch reads.

Southern California Edison (SCE) officials have already announced that they are considering public safety power shut-offs (PSPS) on Thanksgiving Day due to the elevated fire risk that the forecast weather brings, potentially impacting over 13,000 customers across Los Angeles County.

“During these events, we will proactively turn off power in high fire risk areas to reduce the threat of wildfires,” reads a statement issued by SCE Wednesday. “Turning off our customers’ power is not something we take lightly, but PSPS events are one of the ways we can better ensure the safety of the public, our customers and our employees.”

Power officials say that they are monitoring conditions for PSPS outages starting at noon on Thanksgiving Day until 3 p.m. Friday, with potentially affected areas near the Santa Clarita Valley including the eastern portion of Canyon Country, Acton and Agua Dulce.

  2. Edison doesn’t give a crap about it’s customers only it’s shareholders. If we freeze and don’t have Thanksgiving dinner they don’t care.
