A red flag warning has been issued for Thanksgiving Day as strong winds and dry conditions are expected in Santa Clarita.
The red flag warning is expected to go into place Thanksgiving Day at 1 a.m. lasting through Friday, said Ryan Kittell, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
“We do have a high wind warning and a red flag warning out for Santa Clarita,” Kittell said.
The red flag warning starts Thanksgiving Day at 1 a.m. and is set to last until 11 a.m. Friday.
The high wind warning is in place from Wednesday 9 p.m. until 3 p.m. Thursday.
“Generally gusts, especially tomorrow, will be 40 to 55 mph and a few isolated gusts up to 65 mph in the hills,” Kittell said.
Thursday night into Friday winds are expected to diminish to around 30 to 40 mph, according to officials.
Due to the strong winds, and low humidity levels, brush fires could spread rapidly if they ignite.
First responders are warning Thanksgiving chefs to be cautious while cooking especially if they plan on barbecuing, smoking or frying their turkey dinner.
As of 12:20 p.m. Wednesday, a chance of Public Safety Power Shut Offs, (PSPS) are possible for parts of Castaic and Canyon Country, according to officials with Southern California Edison.
By next week temperatures are expected to be cooler with a chance of rain.
