The Santa Clarita area is under a flood watch through Saturday afternoon, and a flash flood warning through Friday night.
Santa Clarita is under a flood watch through Saturday afternoon and a flash flood warning through 10 p.m. Friday due to excessive rainfall.
“Between 1 and 3 inches of rain have fallen,” said a statement from the National Weather Service Los Angeles. “Additional rainfall amounts of 2 to 5 inches are possible in the warned area, where flash flooding is already occuring.”
The flash flood was called “life threatening” by the NWS. Creeks, burn scars, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses are expected to be affected.
Shallow landslides and mudslides are also predicted. In recent burn areas they are very likely to occur.
“Residents living in or immediately downstream should take immediate precautions to protect
life and property,” authorities with the NWS said. “Quickly move away from the burn area only if it is safe to do so, otherwise shelter in place and move to a second story or the highest location in your home to stay out of the path of fast-moving water and debris flows.”
Flash flooding may occur after the warning’s set end.
“The threat of flash flooding is expected to continue past 10 PM, especially for Los Angeles County,” officials with the NWS said. “The current warning may need to be extended.”
When encountering flooded roads, officials recommend turning around. Extra caustion is needed at night, when flooding is harder to recognize.
“Most flood deaths occur in vehicles,” officials with the NWS said.
