Dodgers Beat Diamondbacks With 10th Inning Walk-Off Run

The Los Angeles Dodgers (28-10) went to extra innings with the Arizona Diamondbacks (14-23) Wednesday evening but secured the 3-2 win with a walk-off single from Will Smith.

Walker Buehler made his return from the injured list with the pitching start for the Dodgers and threw five scoreless innings.

Caleb Ferguson relieved Buehler to start the sixth inning, but gave up a solo home run to the second batter he’d faced, Christian Walker for the game’s first run and a 1-0 Diamondbacks lead.

The run and a pair of subsequent singles to David Peralta and Josh Rojas to put runners on first and second was enough to end Ferguson’s night before the inning was over as the Dodgers turned the ball over to Blake Treinen out of the bullpen.

The switch paid off as Treinen got out of the inning without giving up the run and threw a scoreless seventh inning as well.

While the Dodgers had a solid night of pitching, the Diamondbacks did as well with a quality start from Zac Gallen, who went seven innings with no runs scored.

The bullpen continued to have success for the Dodgers though as Brusdal Graterol went three-up three-down in the eighth as well.

It wasn’t until the bottom of the ninth that the Dodgers finally found some offense, when Mookie Betts once again rose to the occasion with a line-drive solo home run to center field to tie things up 1-1 and send the game to extra innings.

Kenley Jansen got the call to take the mound for the Dodgers in the tenth with Daulton Varsho starting on second base under the MLB’s new extra-innings rules for the modified 2020 season.

After opening the inning with a flyout, Jansen loaded the bases with a walk and a hit batter, and walked in a run to give the Diamondbacks a 2-1 lead. Jansen kept his composure and closed out the inning with back-to-back outs.

Max Muncy started on second for the Dodgers and Chris Taylor opened the inning with a bunt. As Muncy raced to third, Diamondbacks pitcher Junior Guerra overthrew the third baseman which gave Muncy the opportunity to make it home for the tying run 2-2.

With Taylor on second base, catcher Will Smith lined a single to right field to bring in Taylor for the go-ahead score and the 3-2 win.

The Diamondbacks and Dodgers close out their three-game series at Dodger Stadium Thursday evening at 6:40 p.m.
