Dodgers Rip Off 6th Victory In Their Last 7 Games With A 5-2 Win Over Rockies

Dodgers extend N.L. West lead behind strong start from top prospect Pepiot.

The Los Angeles Dodgers entered their weekend series with the San Diego Padres holding a 2.5-game lead in the National League West. Taking 3 out of 4 against San Diego gave the Boys In Blue breathing room, extending the division lead as they continue their gauntlet of 20 games in 20 days.

In a surprise move, the Dodgers opted to recall top prospect Ryan Pepiot to start Tuesday against the Colorado Rockies in place of Mitch White. The move paid off for the team in spades.

Pepiot, recalled from the minor leagues for the fourth time already this season, pitched five innings striking out six Rockies and surrendering just one run on four hits and one walk en route to his first big league victory.

“My fastball command was good, and that made my changeup effective,” Pepiot said. “Getting the win is special, sure, but the important thing is that I went deep enough to help the bullpen and help our team win.”

The team’s sixth-ranked prospect and Major League Baseball’s 78th overall according to MLB.com, Pepiot has likely earned himself a sizable amount of frequent flyer miles this season as the Dodger’s spot starter.

The Butler University product made his MLB debut on May 11th of this year in a 5-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Pepiot was sent down to AAA Oklahoma City the following day and AA Rancho Cucamonga two days after that before once again being thrust into big league action for starts on May 17th and May 27th versus the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Pepiot had issued 11 walks in his first 11.1 Major League Innings. On Tuesday, the Indiana native erased any concerns about his command, using an effective off-speed pitch to play off a fastball that consistently sat in the mid-90s. His only blemish, a run-scoring double from Jose Iglesias in the 2nd inning.

Max Muncy promptly returned fire with a two-run homer in the bottom half of the inning to give the Dodgers Rookie a 2-1 lead that he wouldn’t relinquish. Mookie Betts added a solo home run in the 3rd inning, his 18th of the season, and Justin Turner, Gavin Lux, and Trayce Thompson each provided run-scoring hits to give the Dodgers a 5-2 victory.

The Dodgers look for their seventh victory in their past 8 games tonight as they continue their series versus the Rockies at Dodger Stadium with Mitch White taking on Jose Urena at 7:10 PM PDT.

  1. Trayce Thompson a guy that has spent most of his career going from Major league to minor leagues he is playing well, hope he can land a permanent position in the majors.
