Newhall Softball Player Advances Team Mexico To Bronze Game In Olympics

Brittany Cervantes is a Santa Clarita native and University of Kentucky alum and now plays a crucial part on the Olympic softball team for Mexico at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

A National Pro Fastpitch player turned Olympic athlete, Cervantes got her start right here in Newhall before pursuing a career in softball.

In a Sunday morning game, Mexico defeated Italy in a 5-0 win. Cervantes pushed in the winning runs, giving Mexico their first ever Olympic softball victory.

An offensive player, Cervantes’ talent and undeniable hard work dominated the field with a home run and an RBI (runs batted in), accounting for almost half of the total runs scored.

In another game that was played early Monday morning, Cervantes batted 2-2 to defeat Australia 4-1, launching the team into the bronze medal game against Canada.

Other than just her obvious Olympic prowess, Cervantes lives in history for her time at the University of Kentucky (UK) as well. Now director of softball operations at UK, her 2011 season performance brought UK to their first Super Regionals in the 2011 NCAA Division I Softball Tournament for the first time in program history. Along with this feat, Cervantes is the first UK alum to ever hit a home run or score a run in the Olympic games, according to the school website.

In the last push for Mexico’s first Olympic softball medal, Mexico is set to face Canada Monday at 9:00 p.m. (PST).
