Families in Action – March 25, 2013

Spring Break is just around the corner for most of the schools in the Santa Clarita Valley. Cary Quashen and Bob Sharits of Action said this is one of the most dangerous times of the year for transitional aged individuals (18-25 years old).

Naomi Cheriegat, a staff member at Action, came on the show today to talk about her past struggles with alcohol and the dangers of spring break.

Naomi talked about being in college at 14 years old and how that added to creating easier opportunities to drink alcohol.

“When I was 14 years old I went to a party and I walked in and people were doing and drugs drinking, and a girl ran right in front of me and she was completely topless,” Cherigat said. “I remember seeing that and saying to myself I would never do that.”

Naomi then went on to say that two weeks later she went to visit her friend in San Francisco and she ended up doing exactly what she said she’d never do.

Hosts Cary Quashen and Bob Sharits shared some startling statistics related to college students drinking during spring break:

  • The average man reported drinking 18 drinks per day

  • The average woman reported drinking 10 drinks per day

  • Of the 442 women and 341 men that were surveyed, more than 50 percent of all men and more that 40 percent of all woman drank until they became sick or passed out at least once

  • 40 percent of the men and 33 percent of the women reported being drunk daily
