Tip of the Week: Preventing Mail Theft
With the holidays approaching, many of us will be sending and receiving many more items of mail and packages than usual. Mail theft is a problem nationwide, and often results in the loss of products, as well as incidents of identity theft. The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies work diligently to patrol residential areas to deterred crime, but we need your help as well. Here are some tips to help prevent mail and package thefts.

1. Check your mail DAILY. Never leave your mail in your mailbox overnight or for long periods of time.

2. If you are going to be away from your home for an extended period of time, consider having a friend or relative picking your mail up for you.

3. When sending outgoing mail, try using a postal office community mailbox, or dropping your items off at the actual post office.

4. Try to know when packages will be arriving at your home, and bring them into your home as soon as possible. If you cannot be home, consider asking a friend or family member to pick the packages up for you.

The following incidents can be reported online:

It can take seconds for a thief to steal something from your car, so never leave valuables inside. Most vehicle crime is preventable. Don’t make your car a target for thieves by leaving sought after items such as purses, wallets, laptop computers and cell phones in plain view. Always check you have closed all your windows and locked the doors before leaving your car unattended. While there’s no surefire way to totally prevent your car from being broken into, keeping these tips in mind can make your car less of a target.
