West Ranch High graduate Riley Mita, representing the Canyons Aquatics Club, will compete in the US Open Water National Championships at Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., on Sunday.

Riley is preparing for the 5K race. He competed in the 10K race last week and finished 25^th overall. He was ninth for swimmers ages 18 and under. Riley is ranked sixth in the nation in the open water 5K and competed in the 5K race last year in Long Beach where he finished 11^th.

In auto racing, Canyon High graduate Greg Pursley won the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race at the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He won the pole and led every lap for his fourth win of the season.

He leads the West Series standings after five races and has won six of the past eight West Series races dating back to 2010.

In the Valley Invitational Baseball League, West Ranch ran its record to 4-0 and stayed undefeated after the first week of play.

Valencia suffered its first loss of the summer baseball league.

West Ranch is coming off a 7-2 win over Chaminade. Michael Silva drove in three runs and Casey Gahan had three hits for West Ranch.

Valencia lost to Simi Valley, 11-3, and dropped to 3-1 after four games.

Golden Valley and Saugus each have one win. The Grizzlies beat a talented Westlake team, 5-3. Hart and Canyon are still looking for their first win.

In the NHL playoffs, the Boston Bruins scored four goals in the first period and won Game 6 of the Stanely Cup finals, 5-2, over the Vancouver Canucks.

The series is tied and three games apiece. Game 7 is in Vancouver on Wednesday night.

The Dodgers coughed up four runs in the seventh inning and lost to the visiting Reds, 6-4. Rookie Dee Gordon drove in the first run of his major league career for the Dodgers. But Joey Votto capped the four-run seventh inning with a three-run home run for the Reds.

In other games, the Diamondbacks  beat the Marlins, 12-9, the Padres beat the Rockies, 3-1, the Astros beat the Braves, 8-3, the Cubs shut out the Brewers, 1-0, and the Pirates beat the Mets, 3-1.

In the American League, the Angels got a pair of home runs from Vernon Wells and beat the Mariners, 6-3. His two-run homer in the seventh inning broke a 3-3 tie.

The Indians blanked the Yankees, 1-0, and the Tigers doubled up on the Rays, 2-1 in 10 innings.
