County Regional Planning commissioners have given developers the go-ahead to build more than 80 condominium units on an eight-acre vacant lot in Castaic.
Pending the completion of miscellaneous conditions, approval was given to Newhall Land and Farming Co. to construct the gated community east and west of Van Gorder Way between Violin Canyon Road and the 27500 block of Lake Hughes Road.
Castaic Town Councilman Bob Lewis said the original design of the infill project called for three-story units, but residents of neighboring Stonegate community opposed the height of the homes at community public hearings, one of which occurred on July 7.
Project managers revised the plans to eliminate one story, reduced the density of the design and added amenities, Lewis said.
“Newhall Land worked very hard with residents in the area to make the project become an asset to the community,” Lewis said. “(Newhall Land) went out of their way and brought (the project) to us before us before they took it to the county, then changed the project to fit in with the community.”
Buyers interested in the 84 two-story detached units will be able to choose from three floor plans consisting of 1,518 to 1,962 square feet. Two car garages will come with each unit.
“They’re very nice condos,” Lewis said. “Not everyone can afford a single-family home. These are free-standing condos that are not attached, so (buyers will be) getting a single-family-design-style condo.”
Amenities for the project include a 7,800 square-foot recreation center, 1,000-square-foot pool, a cabana, 57 guest parking spaces and tot lot.
