UPDATE: Unlawful Assembly Declared As Hundreds Of Santa Clarita Protesters Gather To Protest Death Of George Floyd

An unlawful assembly has been declared as protesters gather at all four corners of the intersection of Valencia Boulevard and McBean Parkway in Valencia on Saturday over the death of George Floyd, an African American man who was arrested in Minneapolis and subsequently died in police custody.

UPDATE (1:45 p.m.): Law enforcement has declared the protest an unlawful assembly as protestors block a major intersection in Valencia.

On Friday, one woman stood alone at this intersection. On Saturday, hundreds of people gathered to protest the death of George Floyd, an unarmed African American man who died in police custody after being arrested in Minneapolis for attempting to purchase groceries with an allegedly counterfeit $20 bill.

By 11:30 a.m., the Santa Clarita protestors eventually moved over to the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station to continue the demonstration.

The Watch Commander on duty at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, Lt. Ethan Marquez, addressed the crowd of protesters outside the station just before noon, stating that there were “peaceful” protesters.

Kim Barnes, a protester said. “I’m here because as an African American I am tired of seeing this happen, I don’t have the words to describe how I feel right now. I’m tired of us not being treated as human.”

Barnes stated that she does not agree with the looting and violence happening during other protests across the country, especially in Minneapolis, the city where Floyd’s death took place.

After the video of the incident went viral, protests broke out across the country, many of which turned violent. By Friday morning, over 170 buildings in Minneapolis, including the city’s Third Precinct, had been looted or damaged as a result of violent protests.

“I’ve never done anything like this before,” said Barnes. “I’ve never protested, I’m a good person, I do my job, I live a good life. But I am angry, and I’m tired of it.”

Barnes encouraged her fellow protesters to stay peaceful and focus on their message.

Around 1:15 p.m., more than 100 protestors took to the center of the intersection for a demonstration, holding their signs and impeding traffic.

As of 1:40 p.m. Saturday, roadway shutdowns have been extended to include: Eastbound Valencia Boulevard at the entrance to the Westfield Valencia mall, westbound Valencia at Goldcrest, southbound McBean at Del Monte Drive, northbound McBean at the entrance to the transit center.

By 2:00 p.m., California Highway Patrol had also responded to the scene, assisting the LASD in directing protestors out of the intersection with a wall of officers and warnings over loudspeakers, informing protestors that the gathering was now considered to be an “unlawful assembly” and those continuing to impede traffic were at threat of being arrested.

After officers were able to detain Floyd with minimal struggle, video footage of his arrest taken by a bystander shows a Minneapolis Police officer with his knee over Floyd’s neck.

“Please, I can’t breathe,” Floyd can be heard crying in the video. “Please man.”

The circumstances leading up to this moment are still under investigation. Floyd later died in police custody.

Preliminary reports of Floyd’s autopsy were announced Friday, where officials with the Hennepin County Medical Examiner stated that they found “no physical findings that support a diagnosis of traumatic asphyxia or strangulation.”

All four officers involved in the arrest have since been fired, and Derek Chauvin — the officer who allegedly had his knee over Floyd’s neck — has been charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter.

  1. What a bunch of losers.

    • Care to elaborate how a group of people exercising their right to peaceful assembly in SCV, calling for an end to excessive police force/abuse of power against POC, demanding equal protection under the law and justice for George Floyd are losers? Seems to me, your ignorance and willful disregard of others life experiences may help you sleep at night however, the words “No Justice, No Peace” have never been more prescient than now.

      • I’m not sure what better justice needs to happen when the police officer was swiftly charged with murder and his wife divorced him.

        • You call that ‘SWIFTLY’?! Don’t you understand that if those officers were civilians, they would have been arrested on the spot! Clearly you are blind to the problem. There were FOUR officers that took part in George Floyd’s MURDER.

        • The one officer was charged, but there were also 3 other officers who stood by and did nothing as George Floyd begged for his life. In other words, they aided and abetted in this crime. Those 3 officers have not been charged and please note, being charged is not the same has being convicted. Better justice? How about equal justice.

      • You mean the same people who just broke into the Kohls are looting it right now. F’ing losers.

    • When you make a blanket statement like that, it is unfair. George Floyd’s murder is an outrage. People got upset and wanted to affect change somehow. They were wearing masks. You sound hateful.

    • The statistical significance of what they are protesting is literally not understood by any of these low iq protesting zombies, they are only virtue signaling in their ignorance.
If you truly care about black lives go protest the real issues, like black on black crime.
do you think looting, violence, and blocking roads will make racism better or worse?
(blacks in america are free btw, racism is not a huge issue statistically in 2020)
any sensible person is standing on the sidelines is looking in disgust as these people make a fool of themselves, but when our children and families are threatened you will not be met with the same tolerance and benevolence for sure.
to all these nonviolent protesters i would say go hit the books, understand what youre protesting, then come back and protest something real you absolute msm zombie

  2. As long as they don’t bring that racist group blm out. What I see here are stupid people with no masks on during an airborne virus outbreak. Cops shoot people of all colors they shot a White guy the other day in Lancaster no one deserves to die so don’t resist arrest and don’t make a sudden move to spook a cop with a gun. If you look like a thug act like a thug you will get treated as a thug this life and has nothing to do with the color of your skin. don’t let the color of your skin be your excuse for your crappy life and most importantly don’t break the law if you don’t want to deal with the cops. remember we do need the cops to serve and protect they are not all bad. We could do with less citations though.

    • Will, your comments are unfortunate. That perspective is the reason our country continue to be in this position. I pray you find a way to see the situation from a different vantage point. A vantage point different than your own.

    • Willing to bet that the vast majority are not from this area! I drove through this intersection around 10:30 and saw two people holding a sign proclaiming BLM. They were screaming obscenities at cars and flipping off police who were just arriving. Classy way to “honor” the late Mr Floyd!

      • You mean like the “patriots” carry automatic rifles and storming the state Capital in Michigan right? Classy way to act during a global pandemic don’t you agree?

        • Gee – I didn’t see any cars on fires, stores being robbed and/or burnt down, traffic stopped, or police pummeled with rocks, fireworks and obscenities in Michigan.
Big difference between peaceful protests and the animals running wild in Minnesota, LA and elsewhere.

        • We’re these Patriots looting stores and burning buildings down Alice?

There’s a huge difference, you’re comment shows your lack of intelligence.

          • These “patriots” were not met with water cannons, rubber bullets and tear gas. They were allowed to protest. The very first day during the “Peaceful Protest” regarding Floyd is when they were treated poorly. See the difference?

          • were your
            Intelligence!

      • Mark
I too was there at 10:30. There were at least 15 people setting up! Your lies can try to incite fear for the people did not participate, but you should be ashamed to bluntly lie on the future of the country. EVERYONE HAD ON MASK! No one was screaming obscenities (next lie) at cars. The chant was I CANNOT BREATHE! Be “classy” and take your lies back to the underbelly you came from.

    • It’s so upsetting to see people with this mindset in 2020 America. And what’s even more upsetting is that you are choosing to justify your racism, instead of understanding that this is an issue that stems deeper than just one black mans life being taken from him. There is a significant flaw in this system that is supposed to be used to protect and serve, while it’s clear that some levels enforcement officials pick and choose who they want to protect and serve. You can say what you want, but there is clear cut video evidence of this senseless act. So referring to the Black Lives Matter movement as a “racist group” clearly shows how misinformed you are, which is probably why you sit behind your keyboard feeling really great about the ignorance you just plastered online.

      • Whether it is one black man, one white, yellow or brown man/woman/trans person it should not matter. This was an injustice to this person with the cold taking of this George Floyd’s life. As others have stated – if they would have walked into that store, they would be alive today. I agree that this should not happen in 2020, and neither should the rioting or looting. People have lost their lives with this rioting. BLM, like many other activist groups serve a purpose. They should also be condoning the violence that has occurred across this country, or they are complicit in the injuries/deaths that have occurred during the protest that they helped organize.

      • Black lives matter group is the same as those crazy white pride groups both promoting hate for someone, sorry but I see no difference just a different race.

    • I was happy to see young people caring about this cause. The country is in disarray and the best thing to do is VOTE on 11/3/20. If you look at American history, even this past year, African American males are targeted far and above White males. I am White myself but disgusted at the hate that is coming from this Administration on down!

      • Yes vote out every crazy tax loving Democrat. The Republicans fought to end slavery

      • You have to realize a few things. This also happened in Ferguson, Baltimore and NY under the previous administration. This has also happened in the most liberal of communities, and under local jurisdication (i.e. not federal).
I do agree to vote – when you have the same administration running California / MN / NY / Chicago for decades, and it gets worse – things need to change.
Here in Santa Clarita – people voted in an agitator in 2018 for CA25 – look what happened there. Fortunately, people chose to get away from the ‘more of the same’.

      • Yes, because If you don’t vote for Biden, “Then you ain’t black”. That’s not racist at all. Also, the only hate I see is the hatred for Trump and police. Even though I know you can’t see it because it is “justified” in your mind, please start using coming sense. Always acting on emotion is what has gotten us into this mess.

      • I agree Ellen! Basically, this president, if you want to call him that, is responsible for a lot of the bigotry and nastiness we’re seeing, and has promoted hate and violence, lying, and his lack of human empathy is one for the record books! This country desperately needs to get rid of this terrible, selfish, narcissistic, lousy example of a human being like yesterday!! Everyone, even his previous supporters are agreeing now, after seeing enough of this garbage! We will go to the polls in full force to once and for all rid ourselves of this scourge!
        Make sure you vote 2020!

    • Everyone had a mask on except the cops and one two-year-old.

    • Will, you are a completely ignorant, weak cowardly moron. I think you should go out and stand on Fairfax and tell the crowd there how you feel, but people like you have no balls.
      Get a clue.

    • The message of black lives matter, I think you are misundersstanding. They are saying Black lives matter because there seem to be many people saying and acting like they don’t. To say that’s racist would be like me calling you selfish if you told me your life matters. While all lives should matter, there seems to be many who forgot. Try looking for the good in things and not assume the worst first.

    • Kind of like those same ‘STUPID’ people who were out there a couple weeks back (with no masks) crying and protesting the Stay-In-Place order?!! You are tone deaf to what’s important.

  3. This is America at its best; peacefully protesting America at its worst in the wanton deliberate murder by the police of a person already in custody, cuffed and not resisting, only pleading with his last breaths for his life.

Hopefully this death is the flash point that unites Americans in demanding fairness, justice, equality and respect. I am heartened by all the peaceful demonstrations in so many cities across the land. I don’t believe I’ve ever witnessed such a coming together of all races in such unity. It’s important to distinguish protest from rioting and looting as we also witnessed. The rats always take advantage of these situations; more America at its worst but don’t be fooled.

    • Sad that despite whatever goes down, and for whatever reasons, we can’t learn from from what went down more than 50 years ago and in-between! We’re collectively so stupid, we never learn the lessons intended, and keep repeating the same old-same old mistakes decades later, with no end to that same behavior in sight! Some ‘armchair’ optimists seem to think we’ve made some headway, but in reality, when it comes down to it, we see that we haven’t at all! Say what you will, but things are gonna stay this way. We don’t have the brains or capacity to change, it seems. So sad………

  4. “We hold these truths to be self-evident that All men are created equal: that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are LIFE, LIBERTY, and the Pursuit of Happiness.”

“We the People of the United States in order to form a more Perfect Union” Establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility. 1619 -1865 Chattle Slavery was apart of the New World which would eventually become the United States. Men, Women, and Children were bought and sold like one sell a horse or a sheep. These slaves were beaten, raped, made to work from sun up to sun down for free. Why because they were not considered human. White America were citizens, black Americans were subjected. After Slavery Jim Crow, Black Codes, and White Flight. There never was a Marshall plan to protect the former slaves or their descendants. When a person is not considered equal in every sense of the word, that opens the door for attacks lynching, murder, hate, and lies. Life, Liberty, and Happiness..comes when White America sees African Americans as Equal in status and all the rights or privileges and respect they enjoy are afforded to African Americans without racial backlash. A more perfect Union comes when We the People will never let evil elements of racism continue to fester in our presence.

    • You do know Africa sold and traded their own people like merchandise right? The English did not go and capture them. We are way passed those days it’s time to let the past go and move on. Stop using it as an excuse it’s annoying to hear all the time.

      • Your so racist is disgusting,
Leave those comments to your damn self! You sound ridiculous! Stop commenting on this if you don’t understand their pain or can’t have any empathy of what’s going on. Clearly your WHITE! It’s people like you who make change hard to do! Old school way of thinking! Disgusting it’s 2020 wake up.

      • Easy for you to say! You’re not African American! And you are definitely not a scholar.

    • Thank you Kevin for reminding us that if we don’t remember history we are doomed to repeat it. I hope that one day soon our representatives in Congress will remember that they are there to fight for us the people and not for the lobbyists. Everyone must vote. It is essential.

  5. Actually they are all wearing masks and complying so far. I hope it stays that way and they experience the best in police today.

  6. I support the 1st amendment, and peaceful protesting.
I do not want for the destruction/burning/injuring of others as has been done across this country of ours.
I do agree with Will ^^ in most of his points.
This police officer in MN does need to be judged in a court of law. This street vigilante business serves nobody, and in most cases actually hurts those in the local community the most.
Please do not bring violent outside protesters into our community, and keep the protests peaceful.

  7. I was there from 11a to Noon. Personally. I didn’t see one person who didn’t have a mask on, although keeping distance was difficult at times due to the hundreds of demonstrators. We walked past City Hall and to the police station where we took a knee in silence for 8 minutes. I saw/heard about 3 people who were IMO obnoxious, but not destructive in any way. Vast majority was there to show support for George Floyd and the BLM movement. The officers I saw/heard were all patient and respectful. I hope things continued peacefully after I left. I’ve lived in SCV for about 17 years now, and don’t think I’ve ever been more proud to be a part of this community.

  8. Did you read the corners report ? No sign of strangulation . And the officer is under arrest for 3rd degree murder. That’s not good enough. What do you think would bring justice?

  9. On May 5 there was a rally or protest. People screaming, waving flags, not wearing masks or social distancing. All while people. They wanted to open SCV. There were no sheriffs, HIghway Patrol or and cops. There no guns. Double standard….

  10. Black lives matter. What race is responsible for the most African American deaths??…

Answer: African Americans!!! Fact, look it up. So maybe they need to practice what they preach.

    • I looked THIS up; Most Whites are killed by other Whites.
Most people are killed by members of their own race.

We are talking about a black man killed by four(4) White cops.

      • What happened in Minnesota simply should not happen. As soon as he’s in cuffs, everything needs to stop. No need for the cop to still have his knee and weight on the man’s neck after he’s been restrained.

From 1976 to 2015, the death of an African American is caused by another African American 94% of the time!!

So maybe, just maybe the black lives matter people should be protesting in black neighborhoods……practice what you preach.

    • Let me fact check for you!

DEATH TOLL FROM THE SLAVE TRADE
      THE AFRICAN HOLOCAUST

60 MILLION DEAD AT THE HANDS
      OF WHITE CHRISTIAN IMPERIALISM

400 years of slavery on the land you love!

    • And why aren’t they protesting black on black crimes in Chicago? Oh, the news won’t cover that. And if this is a race issue why did they loot and burn down stores in Minnesota? Does anyone realize there are old people there, mostly blacks, who have no cars and walk to the store to get their groceries, etc. What do they do now starve? Nobody thinks about them. It’s only about how much free stuff I can grab. Not to mention that poor horse that had a brick thrown in his face, just an innocent horse. Pigs!

  11. I miss the old Santa Clarita VALLEY of the 1980’s…..when we were a valley. We were a small town. It was great!! There were more stop signs than stop lights.
There would never of been a protest. People actually didn’t lock their doors. Schools didn’t have metal detectors and SCV actually deserved the name AWESOMETOWN

now it seems like everyone is in a hurry and this place is soooo crowded.

I would expect protests in Lancaster and Palmdale but not here….

Just a sign of the time…this city is definitely changing

  12. So if I’m driving down the street minding my own business and you are illegally in the street blocking my way…..I would highly suggest you move or it may be the last car you try to block!

Blocking a car with your body is moronic thing to do and will end badly for you, I promise.

  13. protesting is legal to do, but it s not to destroy property, cause injury to others, or block the movement of another human, that is holding someone hostage and that’s a felony.if you want to do it right follow the king, martin that is. he did not have violence in his.
The santa clarita movement is just a bunch of followers who think they are kool.. Mr. Floyd should not have died. BLM wanted this cop arrested and charged with manslaughter, guess what it happened so stop already.. its done you got what you wanted, he will go to jail along with his 3 partners for at least 30 years.
no one is above the law

    • Thing is, he was just charged with 3rd degree murder. Most folks see that as a slap on the wrist! Should’ve thrown the book at him! First degree murder for sure! Now maybe you can see a bit more clearly why people are pissed about this and not satisfied at the charge he got!

  14. We all have opinions agree and disagree.
But these men and ladies in uniform are our neighbirs, husbands, SCV family. Your letting people who don’t live here, curse at them when they (individuals) did not kill anyone is heart breaking as the act committed was horrendous. Stop lumping all cops because if a few..

  15. Mark

    • Mark you need to listen to the obscenities shouted at the police in front of the Sheriff Station, I am on the side of protest all the way, but the message gets lost with all that screaming and cussing. The young man leading the kids and taking a knee for 8 min was right on, but the out of town lady screaming later was not from Santa Clarita, neither was the 100 plus people staying at 2 houses in Saugus. We need to keep it safe, legal and local to get our message out.

  16. The history of policing in America must be taught, warts and all. Many cops are only vaguely aware of the 19th century Southern DNA in their profession.

  17. Where is Trump? Can he please put on his best impression of a compassionate, inspiring leader and say something meaningful?

    • It’s a big country Anne, Governors are supposed to be representing their states, we have been hearing from ours daily for months, but now, not so much,
its’ Sunday @ 2:00 in the afternoon and Santa Monica stores and shops are getting looted right now, I guess people are so upset and want to affect change somehow, where is our elected executive of state government leader Newsom.

      • BS, Newsom called on the National Guard last night after talks with LA Mayor Garcetti. A curfew was called last night at 8 p.m. by said mayor and again tonight. That is an example of local leaders stepping up. Meanwhile, Trump continued with his divisive, inflammatory and self-serving rhetoric; militarized the police force and hid behind a darkened White House just like the feckless bigot he has been his entire life. No one with a living brain cell expects him to calm the nerves of the nation because all he’s done in the past has sown the seeds of division we are bearing witness to now. America your house is on fire and the only thing Trump Did was fan the flames.

  18. Will,

You’re ignorant. Black Lives Matter stems from decades of injustice. White Pride stems from hate. Educate yourself before you publish commentary

  19. What the hell has happened to Santa Clarita, it used to be so normal. So one man was killed by an evil insane cop in Minnesota but they are protesting here? Idiots. Nobody is out there when a white girl gets raped and killed by a bunch of blacks and the Communist news refuses to report black on white crime. Playing right into the hands of evil George Soros who instigates this stuff, useful idiots! I’m sure that crazy cop went after white guys and Hispanics too.

  20. WHAT A BUNCH OF LOSERS!

  21. All Lives Matter, drop the race card, drop the hate, and drop the he said she said BS. The fact is a man is dead whether he’s white, black, Asian, or Mexican should not matter. Its 2020 until we stop referencing ourselves by color we will never stop the hate. I’m a Hispanic who is part Russian, German, Italian, American Indian and Canadian Indian. I have a Black step mom and family with mixed race who I love dearly. when people have asked me in my travels what I am I always said American, the race division has to stop it on TV, the news, the papers, and on the streets. ALL LIVES MATTER cause we are all human!!!
stop the hate and start the healing!!!

  22. Again, Trump…where are you? We need your encouragement.

  23. So many oppressed people. Protest for the elderly who are being happily put away by ‘loving’ family members into elder care warehouses. No one loves them like family and family doesn’t love them. Guess it’s pay back for most kids who were put into day care their entire lives. Pay back is rough. OUCH!!
