Heavy rains pounded the area causing major mudslides and flooding near hillsides which had been left sparse after the Powerhouse Fire in 2013.

“It was like a tornado, it with with such voracity,” said Jennifer, who lives on Munz Ranch Road in Lake Hughes.

The storm produced quarter sized hail, lightning and 60 mph winds.

Roads remain closed in impacted areas including Munz Ranch Road, Lancaster Road, Johnson Road, Lake Hughes Road, Godde Hill Road, Bouquet Canyon Road, San Francisquito Canyon Road and Spunky Canyon, and many residents remained in their cars for hours waiting for roads to open.

One man and his family said they had been in the car since 3:30 p.m. wondering what might have happened to their home.

Steve and Vicki Lopez, who also live on Munz Ranch Road, were in a state of shock as they walked through their mud and water filled home.

Broken windows, ice from the hail and two-foot-high piles of mud stacked against their house isn’t the worst of the damage.

In addition to the damage to the home, a neighbor’s house was taken off of its foundation and moved a few hundred feet into the Lopez’ backyard.

The couple’s three horses and dog are still missing and several structures on the property were also destroyed.

This is the second flood the Lopez’s have been through, they lived on Bouquet Canyon Road in Santa Clarita and suffered through the 2005 flooding.

Even though they are up to their knees in mud and worries, they continue to remain positive.

“It could have been worse,” Steve Lopez said.
