Santa Clarita Valley families looking for a unique summer destination may want to consider a visit to the underground car museum known as the Wunderground in Santa Clarita.
In the 161st installment of KHTS’ Extremely Quirky Destinations series, we’re exploring the only Porsche Dealership in the U.S. with an attached underground museum – the Wunderground – and it’s housed here in Santa Clarita.
Tucked beneath the showroom floor of Porsche Santa Clarita in Valencia sits one of the most distinctive automotive spaces in Southern California, the Wunderground Museum. More than a dealership display area, it is a carefully curated underground collection that blends Porsche heritage, design, and performance history into an immersive visitor experience.

From the moment guests arrive at the dealership, the Wunderground sets itself apart. Above ground, the modern Porsche facility reflects the brand’s clean architectural identity.
But the experience takes on a different character as visitors descend below the showroom into a dedicated exhibition space that feels closer to a private automotive vault than a retail environment.
Inside, the Wunderground is designed as a rotating museum rather than a static display. Vehicles are regularly changed, allowing the space to evolve and giving repeat visitors something new to discover.
The curation focuses on Porsche’s full historical arc, from early post-war models that established the brand’s identity to modern performance icons that define its current engineering philosophy.
The collection has featured a wide range of historically significant vehicles. Early Porsche 356 models highlight the brand’s origins in the 1950s and 1960s, while later race-bred machines such as endurance and rally cars showcase Porsche’s long-standing dominance in motorsport.
More contemporary highlights have included halo vehicles like the Carrera GT and 918 Spyder, which represent the peak of Porsche’s modern engineering and design language.
At times, the space has also included culturally significant or enthusiast-owned vehicles tied to well-known collectors and figures within the Porsche community.

What distinguishes the Wunderground is not simply the rarity of the cars, but the way they are presented. Rather than being arranged as a traditional museum lineup, the vehicles are placed in a gallery-style environment that emphasizes lighting, spacing, and visual storytelling. The result is a space that encourages slow exploration, allowing visitors to appreciate design details, engineering evolution, and historical context without the typical barriers found in conventional museum settings.
The atmosphere is intentionally immersive. Industrial-modern design elements, controlled lighting, and open walking paths create a setting that feels both refined and accessible. It is a space built for enthusiasts, but also for casual visitors who may be encountering Porsche’s history in depth for the first time.
The goal is not only to display cars but to communicate the brand’s culture, its focus on precision engineering, motorsport heritage, and continuous innovation.
Unlike many high-end automotive collections that require special appointments or memberships, it is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and on Sunday, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. The best part is that it is all free to enjoy.
