Los Angeles County Sheriff’s officials announced Wednesday that 25 Sheriff personnel and three county inmates have tested positive for coronavirus, officials said.
Over 400 Sheriff personnel are under quarantine COVID-19 as of Wednesday, said Deputy Edmo Luna with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau.
As of 6 a.m. Wednesday, the jail population countywide was at 13,586; however, LASD is unable to confirm if any cases are from Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic, Luna said.
“Since the start of this pandemic, there have been a total of three inmates who have tested positive for COVID-19,” Luna said. “One inmate has fully recovered symptom-free for 72 hours in accordance with CDC guidelines; the remaining two inmates are currently in isolation and under medical observation.”
In addition to the two recovering inmates with the coronavirus, 14 inmates are in isolation and 372 inmates are under quarantine, according to Sheriff’s officials.
Inmates and LASD personnel are put in isolation when they develop a temperature of 100.4 Fahrenheit or higher and are exhibiting symptoms of an upper respiratory infection, Luna said.
“All inmates in isolation under observation have been tested and Correctional Health Services is awaiting results,” Luna said.
Inmates and LASD personnel are placed under quarantine when they have had close contact for 10 minutes or more with a person currently under observation for the coronavirus, according to officials.
Only Correctional Health Services and the Department of Public Health have the authority to designate isolation or quarantine of an inmate, Luna said.
