Khara Bighan,13, Emily Yago,12, and Lily Bigham,10, are participating in the Scripps National Spelling Bee’s second Spellebrity Video Contest, in which they produce videos that promote a love of reading.
“They learned so much from this experience,” said Katherine Bigman, one of the mothers. “Khara used Adobe Premiere for the first time ever.”
The mother said that all of the filming and editing happened in a day and a half — without any help from either parent.
“We just supervised,” said Katherine Bigham. “All of the work was done by the students.”
Khara and Emily both attend Rio Norte Jr. High School, Lily goes to Tesoro Del Valle Elementary.
The contest’s theme is spell out how to kindle the love of reading. The videos feature three words that would be useful to know in a spelling bee that you have come across through your reading, according to their website.
Each video was judged by a panel on the following categories: inspirational quality, relevance to theme, creativity and inclusion of at least three words that would be useful to know for a spelling bee.
The Santa Clarita students made it through this round — it is now up to the online voting.
“The students can’t win unless you vote,” said Katherine Bigham. “The community has been very supportive so far, we just want to thank you all.”
The group of students have the chance to travel to Washington D.C. for the finals, only if they receive enough votes from the community.
“The kids are so excited about the prospect of going on the trip,” said Katherine Bigham. “They have never been to D.C. before.”
Out of the 10 semifinalist teams, five will move on to the Finals in Washington D.C. The winner will be announced at the 2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee.
