Santa Clarita residents are being encouraged to conserve electricity as the west coast battles triple-digit temperatures amidst a heat wave.

Due to high temperatures in California and most of the western United States, the California Independent System Operator Corporation issued a statewide Flex Alert on Monday.
The alert calls for voluntary electricity conservation from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday.
“Consumers are urged to conserve electricity especially during the late afternoon and evening, when air conditioners typically are at peak use,” California ISO said in a statement. “Consumers can help avoid power interruptions by turning off all unnecessary lights, using major appliances before 5 p.m. and after 9 p.m., and setting air conditioners to 78 degrees or higher.”

Flex Alerts are issued due to potential strains on the electrical grid, such as high temperatures across the western U.S., reduced electricity imports, tight natural gas supplies in Southern California and high wildfire risk.
“The ISO has called on all available resources to be available to serve demand. However, conservation is needed to reduce the risk of further emergency measures, including rotating power outages,” the statement said.
The Los Angeles Department of Public Health has also warned residents to take precautions to avoid falling prey to heat-related illness.
“Extreme heat such as this is not just an inconvenience, it can be dangerous and even deadly, but we can protect ourselves, our families and our neighbors if we take steps to remain cool and hydrated,” said Jeffrey Gunzenhauser, the county’s interim health officer.
Temperatures will reach well over 100 degrees throughout the week, peaking at 108, according to the National Weather Service.
People without air conditioning who need a break from the heat can visit cooling centers, such as malls, libraries and senior centers.

Interesting, they want you to turn off the air between 5 and 9 but then report how dangerous the heat is ??
Great! Keep building more and more houses each year. Then when we run out of water and electricity, the answer is conserve during the hottest months of the year. When we conserve too much, just raise the rates to make up the difference! Makes perfect sense!!
