Castaic Middle School(CMS) was selected as one of 15 national finalists for the national competition, which includes five grants of up to $100,000.

CMS is one of three campuses in California to be recognized.

The campus will need to rank in the top-5 schools by popular vote in order to receive one of five $100,000 grants from Farmers Insurance.

The grants will help to further the educational programs of the five campuses designated in each corresponding application.

Castaic Middle School officials are applying for the grant to support a new program called Castaic Middle School TV(CMSTV). The program will help its students learn about the field of television and media while engaging in news reporting for its local community.

“Students learn the ins and outs of creating television programming, while creating daily and weekly news programs,” said Betsy Schubert, a CMSTV parent and grant campaign organizer.

The Castaic Middle School grant proposal said the campus has been facing financial struggles since 2008, but continues to pursue better education and opportunities for its students and community.

“If granted with support from Farmers Insurance, Castaic Middle School will become a place where not only our students, but our community partnerships shine,” according to an excerpt in the grant proposal. “Through on-campus workshops and nonprofit collaborations, the CMSTV program will develop into a community resource unlike any other we have seen in Santa Clarita Valley.”

Ro Osano is one of the primary writers for the CMS grant and is currently the CMSTV advisor and history teacher at the campus. Osano is representing CMS throughout the challenge.

Proposal videos will be available for the public to view from September 29 to October 30. Voting will also be made available at this same time.

Voters will need to provide email addresses, however emails will not used for solicitation purposes during or after the voting period, said one newsletter from the Castaic Middle School.
