Debra Winger To Star In Indie Film Shot In Newhall

A production crew partly took over Walnut Street in Newhall Thursday morning to shoot scenes for an upcoming independent film, according to officials from the motion picture company A24 Films.

A24 Films’ project “The Lovers” will star Netflix’s show “The Ranch” actress Debra Winger, according to according to a source close to the production.” The film is being directed by Azazel Jacobs.

Winger first began her acting career in Santa Clarita, as a mascot character for Magic Mountain, according to SCVHiostory.com, where she performed in the costume of the then famous mascot troll, Bleep.

“The actress remembers that it was between Christmas and New Year’s in 1972 when she sustained a serious on-the-job injury,” according to an SCVHistory article. “Seventeen-year-old Debra was being driven to a location in the park in a Cushman vehicle when she “went out the back end, in costume.” According to news reports, she was partially paralyzed and temporarily blinded. Her recovery took many months.”

Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tracy Letts is expected to co-star with Winger in the film, according to“Deadline Hollywood.”

The two would play an unfaithful wife and husband who find themselves falling back in love with one another, according to the movie-news website.

Filming, which reportedly wraps up Friday, was part of more than a month of filming on location in and around the Santa Clarita Valley.

Locations used also included Newhall Refinery, Doc’s Inn, the intersection of Ninth and Market Street and a Newhall home on Darby.

A notification from city of Santa Clarita officials says the movie will continue filming Friday at 9:30 p.m. on Newhall’s Main Street.

The movie does not have a set release date, according Jeanie Igoe, a creative executive for A24 Films.
