Healthgrades officials released their list of the nation’s top 100 hospitals this week, recognizing Providence Tarzana Medical Center as being in the nation’s top 2 percent of hospitals.

Noted for pediatrics, neonatal intensive care, cardiology and its highly successful robotics program, Providence Tarzana Medical Center was recognized today as one of the nation’s top hospitals, earning Healthgrades’ 2017 America’s 100 Best Hospitals Award for the third straight year.

Based on patient outcomes across 19 conditions and procedures, the distinction ranks Providence Tarzana among the top 2 percent of more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide for consistent, year-over-year superior clinical performance. These measures are conducted by Healthgrades, a leading online consumer resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.

From 2013-15, patients treated at Providence Tarzana and other hospitals achieving Healthgrades’ America’s 100 Best Hospitals Award have, on average, a 27.1 percent lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive this award.

During this same period, if all other hospitals as a group performed at the level of America’s 100 Best Hospitals Award recipients across these 19 procedures and conditions, on average 179,438 lives could potentially have been saved.

For example, patients treated at hospitals that have achieved this distinction had, on average, a 33.2 percent lower risk of dying during hospital stays for heart failure than if treated at a hospital that did not receive the award.

Providence Tarzana has achieved outstanding outcomes for patients in cardiology, geriatrics, pulmonology and in its non-invasive surgical robotics program. Also noteworthy is the hospital’s partnership with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, which raised the level of care available locally for patients in the pediatric unit and the pediatrics and neonatal intensive care units.

The 100 recipients of the America’s 100 Best Hospitals Award stand out among the rest for overall clinical excellence across a broad spectrum of care. During the 2017 study period (2013-2015), these hospitals showed superior performance in clinical outcomes for patients in the Medicare population across at least 21 of 32 most common inpatient conditions and procedures — as measured by objective performance data (risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications).
