Speculation Begins For Steve Knight’s State Senate Seat

With state Sen. Steve Knight, R-Antelope Valley, to adopt a new title — congressman — speculation has already started over who will be his replacement in the state Senate.

The who is very unclear, regarding Knight’s succession. The how is spelled out in the state’s Election Code, according to an official with the Secretary of State’s office.

“In the case of a vacancy in a congressional or legislative office the Governor shall issue a proclamation, within 14 calendar days of the occurrence of the vacancy, calling a special election,” according to Election Code 10700.

Knight, who currently represents state Senate District 21, was chosen to replace Congressman Howard “Buck” McKeon, R-Santa Clarita, in the 25th Congressional District in last Tuesday’s election.

Knight is expected to be sworn in January for his new term, and he’ll likely resign shortly before then.

With two weeks of Knight’s resignation, county officials who will be responsible for the election are expected to be notified.

After county supervisors are notified, an election must be held at least 126 days after the notice, but no more than 140 days after, per the state’s Election Code.

“All voters, regardless of the party preference they disclosed upon registration, or refusal to disclose a party preference, may vote for any candidate for a voter-nominated office,” according to the code.

The top-two candidates will then take part in a run-off election, unless one of the candidates garners 51 percent of the vote.

Assemblyman Scott Wilk, R-Santa Clarita, who lives in the state’s 21st Senate District, said he would not be running for the seat.

“I love the district that I represent and I expect to be named vice chair of a very important committee that I want to be a part of,” Wilk said. “And I believe that we can find a very electable Republican that can do a great job. We’ve got a lot of momentum and we want to keep it going.”

He felt it too early to comment on contenders, he said, however that won’t stop speculation on social media.

A few of the names being mentioned in discussion of the race for the 21st include: Santa Clarita City Councilman Dante Acosta, Tim Donnelly, Johnathon Ervin, Sandra Johnson, John Kunak, Star Moffatt, Evan Thomas and Lou Vince.

  1. Dear Mr. Smith:

Thank you for your article titled: “Speculation Begins for Steve Knight’s State Senate Seat,” dated: 11/10/2014.

I am writing in response to your article and just an FYI, there is nothing speculative that I will run for Senate again. For example, I have pulled my campaign identification number, my team and I launched our Senate webpage back on November 6, just two days after the General Election and I have created four (4) jobs so far, for persons needing work or additional part-time work, who will work on my Senate campaign.

Please visit my webpage at: http://www.starmoffatt4senate.com and you will also see a Press Release announcing my candidacy for Senate.

With the above said, thank you for acknowledging me within your above-mentioned article related to the Senate District 21 seat and as I have previously said to Senator Steve Knight, soon to take the seat as our next honorable Congressman “Steve, thanks for keeping the Senate seat warm for me!”

  2. Please be advised that Mayor of Palmdale Jim Ledford will be announcing his intention to run for 21st Senate District on Monday 11/18/14 at 9:00 Am on the Front of the Palmdale City Hall. Another Press Confetence to announce in Santa Clarita at 11:00 am same day in front of the Santa Clarita City Hall. For more information call 661-810-6990 Kamal.

  3. I heard from my sources that a staff member from Steve Fox’s office could be announcing soon. Presumably as Democrat. But that staff member was waiting to see what Fox does.

  4. I can’t believe Star thinks she is already the standard bearer for this Senate seat. Why don’t we just wait for the filing period to open and see who the better candidates are. So far, the ones I’ve heard aren’t exactly good candidates and would be even worse Senators. I was told the same thing that one of Fox staff members was thinking about it, but she was still talking to supporters.
