  1. Just what we need here more traffic congestion, loud aircraft noise when taking off or landing, potential air mishaps, more pollution, sounds like a well thought out secret plan.

  2. A quarter mile drag strip would cost less, bring revenue to our city, and give car enthusiasts a legal place to race – and add a go kart race track too.

    • Splendid idea. We all miss Saugus speedway and would welcome a track back in town. It would certainly bring revenue to the City

    • Now you are talking.

    • My mom worked at bermite, around 1967 or 68 just before they had an explosion….anyway, we lived in Saugus and alot of drag racers lived in my neighborhood. Tom hoover lived across from me and he let me dust off his dragster before and after races. I was 6 years old…I and my son are current drag racers in div. 6 nhra near Seattle wa….. We went to saugas speedway reguralarly in the late 60s. Would love to talk to someone who went to Saugus speedway at that time…..I remember roarin Orin prosser…..by the way, anyone up on supercross, i got to prep a practice track for ryan villipoto when he was 14 yo…Brad lackey the famous desert cross racer was my neighbor in saugus……more broken bones than evil kneivel at the time, he would ride wheelies up and down the street with casts on…….what a childhood……..please if anyone remembers this time, contact me.

      • There is a group on facebook called “Fans of Saugus Speedway” You would probably like. I just joined myself…you will connect with many fans:) You have to request to join but that is no problem.

  3. Yeah, I don’t think so. We do NOT need an airport in the middle of SCV, including all the noise and pollution. This idea needs to be squashed long before any more thought or money goes into it.

  4. April Fool’s, right?

  5. first we hear of that plan AGAIN

  6. Is this an April Fools joke? I really hope so…

  7. Hey look, it’s April first…

    • Well, you really had me going until I read the quote that you put in there for me. Then I had a good laugh. This was really some fun tongue and cheek for April Fools Day! The best part was naming the aviary for SCOPE just as they always name streets for the Council people that have helped push the project through. Thanks so much for a little light-hearted laughter to start my day.

      • I am a much more straight laced person than my good friend Lynne, so I want to remind everyone of a key fact. Laurene Weste dearly wanted the City of Santa Clarita to buy the first mortgage on the Bermite property and foreclose on it, so the city could own the land at a reasonable price. However, the city hired some top-notch toxics lawyers who told the City Council, in no uncertain terms, that if the city bought the Bermite property they would have to pay to clean up all the toxic substances on it.

In fact, California’s toxic clean up statute, which we used to sue the mortgage lenders on Bermite, in the old PERC lawsuit filed around 2002, explicitly deny protection to foreclosing mortgage lenders and to innocent investors, thanks to the efforts of Jane Williams, political powerhouse leader of California Communities Against Toxics. Jane got that law passed after President Bill Clinton tried to absolve mortgage lenders and innocent buyers with legislation passed while he was trying to save his reputation during the Lewinsky scandal.

So to be a wet blanket, the Bermite property will always be a toxic blob in the center of Santa Clarita, because the State of California Dept. of Toxic Substances Control is profoundly lame and won’t seriously litigate to clean it up. If you want to read how inept the agency is, look at the article at consumerwatchdog dot org called “How Business is Really Done Before California Environmental Agencies” or their longer story “Inside Job”.

I miss you all, wish you Happy April Fools Day and Happy Easter, but I’ve got to get back to my current crisis, which involves a huge Mexican oil platform which blew up in the Gulf of Mexico yesterday. That’s no April Fool Joke.

        • That’s funny! I heard about 7 years ago that the Bermite site was going to be a lovely new municipal oasis, parks and all!!

BUT….. Since then, i have discovered that all of Santa Clarita Valley is Native American Tribal lands held in Patent…. Wow! Are these the Tribes that have yet to become federally recognized?
I am just curious since LAND PATENTS can not be sold… ONLY passed from family or tribal people.
How could these tribes not be federally recognized BUT theres lands held in trust for these un federally recognized tribes of California. Bermite is long gone. Land Patents are FOREVER!!!! Once again all of the Santa Clarita Valley is Tribal lands held in Patent! A Federal Land Patent!
          I am just saying…….
Let us all tell the TRUTH!

  8. If this is not a April Fools joke then, this just confirms why we should have elected officials drug tested, and then finished with this quote.
“If they won’t listen to us about the high-speed rail,” McLean said, “then maybe we can send Sacramento a message via air mail.”

I do not know how to respond to this, best left alone.

  9. Well, you really had me going until I read the quote that you put in for me. Then I had a good laugh. What great tongue and cheek fr April Fools day! I especially liked the part about naming the aviary after SCSCOPE, just as the developers name streets after the City Council folks that have helped pust their project through. Thats fo the light-hearted laughter to start my day

  10. WOW… what a great idea!

We could also have the Bullet Train run UNDER the Santa Clara River and make a stop at the airport as well as Helipads at City Hall, Henry Mayo’s parking structures and the our Public Library in Old Town Newhall.

Hey, why not ALL the libraries?

To further decrease traffic congestion and for the safety of those bicyclists acting as motorists or pedestrians as they choose… we should also include an “Aerial Bike Lane” above all the major roadways so there is no possible way they could interfere with auto traffic, and the possibilities of collisions with aircraft would be minimal.

I could go on for hours… but I think I’ll stop here before I go over the edge. One last point to ponder about the Whittaker-Bermite site, not only did they manufacture explosives, but also stored and produced defoliants, as in Agent Orange…

  11. All you people above must never fly, or else you would see how amazing this plan is. We deserve an airport. Bob Hope is ok, but its still kind of far away and extremely expensive. LAX is really far away, and adds a whole hour in travel time. For the people worried about traffic, well we already have that anyways…

    • Christopher…

I’m retired now, almost dead actually, but for my last 5 years at work between 1995 to 2000, I flew about 3 times a week outta Burbank to places all over this state, and the nation as well. I would have loved to parked at a local site and fly right outta the SCV if I could… I usually left home here at 6 after getting up at 5, on a plane at 7 and at my office in San Ramon by 9 and home again around 7 pm. Not much different than what I did locally navigating to Sherman Oaks and back for 20 years.

But alas… you may have gotten caught up in this April Fool’s joke. The give away for me were the statements made by the local officials and leaders that were all wrong if you know them at all… and the line up of HUGE aircraft in the fotos that would haveta navigate between mountains to land.

Factually, they do this quite well in downtown Aqua Dulce… with small private aircraft… and were even considering private jets at one time. (I don’t know what happened with that…) You might wanna check out moving there though… or the ultimate… Cameron Park CA, near Sacramento. Google-Earth the neighborhood, then zoom in, I think you’ll be impressed!

      Good having fun here…

  12. Nicely done. You had me going for quite a while.

  13. April fool

  14. JUST WHAT WE DON’T NEED! I live a short distance from where this would be and I don’t want jumbo jets taking off and landing that close to where I live. It may bring revenue to the city, but it will also bring more traffic and we already have enough of that.

  15. Got to be an April Fool’s joke.

  16. thats nice, as a new commuter to Valencia, from Acton, the traffic would be a serious nightmare….not good>>>

  17. The funniest part of this whole bit is how MANY bit on it.
Wait! OMG- They probably vote too! Ahhhhhhhh…

  18. One of the better April Fools Day stories. I especially like the airport graphics. Well done.

  19. PEOPLE IT’S AN APRIL FOOLS JOKE…. If you read toward the bottom to the Editors note..

  20. I was like a giddy little kid on the night before Christmas to read the famous KHTS April Fools story. Good Job KHTS lol…….I love reading all the remarks

  21. Really, people really believe this story…it came out at 12:01am APRIL 1st……..

Now, I know why this state voted for Jerry Brown…amazing!

  22. I especially love the picture that shows 747 aircraft. One thing to have something that would support a 737. To support a jumbo definitely makes this a joke but a good one

  23. Really well done April Fool’s joke. Certainly, one for the books. I fell for it and that’s saying something! One of the best in time-honored journalistic tradition.

  24. Yeah !!! Just give more FireWater to those crazy Politicians…..(psst. SECRETLY!)

  25. I don’t agree

  26. Just out of curiosity since I keep hearing about the Bermite site:

What are the dimensions of the Bermite site?
Can the public access the area right now?
Who currently owns the Bermite site?
There has been talk about cleaning up the site for years, but nothing is being done. Why?
What would be the highest and best use of the site if and when it is cleaned up?

  27. Stupid waste of space and time. But I wouldn’t put it past our city council except the one who has common sense, to try something even when power lines are running all over the place. I suppose the fake sign at 5 Knolls that there was going to be a hospital located on that land where all the tenement apartments are now located was also a joke. Guess it was cuz no hospital which is what is badly needed in this end of town.

  28. Born and raised in North Hollywood/Barbank. Share the wealth, unless you have never flown.

  29. Promote aviation. It’s not a joke.

  30. Yes! Put airport!!! For Saugus speedway, relocate the speedway to another unclaimed land near Saugus. Please know that there are some fires so be careful!
