For the last decade, about 10,000 people have turned 65 each day, and according to Kaiden, this trend should continue for the next decade as well.

In regards to the aging population, the best place for seniors to live is often in their own homes, which is a comforting piece of advice to anyone familiar with the daunting waitlists that many skilled nursing facilities have.

Kaiden noted he often asks his clients, “Who’s the most famous person you know, who had full-blown Alzheimer’s, never left his home and stayed there for the rest of his life?”

The answer is Ronald Reagan. Kaiden attributes this to Nancy Reagan’s role as President Reagan’s primary caregiver. “She was his advocate, and you need an advocate today in this system … to take care of you.”

Working with a Santa Clarita elder law attorney can help families of seniors better advocate for their loved ones by addressing what Kaiden calls “the full breadth of issues that seniors face.”

With his clients, he takes a holistic approach and focuses on addressing their options within the long-term care spectrum to create their life care plan. These options include independent living, assisted living and skilled nursing care.

Assisted living costs in the Santa Clarita Valley can range from $3,000 to $6,000 a month, while skilled nursing care options can be found around $10,000 a month, according to Kaiden.

Working with an elder law attorney can help seniors determine how they will pay for long-term care if they require elevated levels of assistance — whether it be through long-term care insurance, VA pension benefits, MediCal or by paying out of pocket.

“Science is getting better, medicine is getting better and people are living longer,” Kaiden said. “But with that blessing comes all of these stressful questions.”

The assistance of an Santa Clarita elder law attorney like Kaiden can help seniors answer these questions and prepare their families to become effective advocates for their loved ones.
