If you’re just getting started, there are three basic types of systems to check out – wick, water culture, and ebb and flow. You can build any of these from separate components or find them in a starter kit at America’s Best Hydroponics.
The easiest starter kit is a wick system, because it has no moving parts. There’s one tank filled with water and nutrients, and a separate reservoir holding growing media and your plants. A wick connecting the two reservoirs sucks water and nutrients into the growing media, where your plants in turn absorb the “food.” A wick system works well for peppers, herbs and micro-greens, but is less effective with water-hungry plants like lettuce.
The water culture hydroponics system is about as uncomplicated. All you need is a reservoir, a piece of Styrofoam that floats on the surface and contains your plants, and an air pump to add oxygen to the plants’ roots. A water culture system is good for water-hungry plants like lettuce, but not so great for plants with longer growing cycles, like tomatoes.
The more complex of the three basic systems is the ebb and flow setup. You use a submergible pump with a timer to flood the growing medium with your solution of water and nutrients, and the solution then drains back into the reservoir between pumps. Using a trimer allows you to schedule your plant feeding based on the size and type of plant, the temperature and the humidity.
