The charter school submitted the five-year charter petition on Feb. 26, for a new school in the same location as the previous AEA, which closed its doors almost a year ago.

In 2016, the Hart Board unanimously denied the Albert Einstein renewal petition due to concerns about the school’s structure and finances, which included $4 million in deficits.

In the submitted proposal Einstein Academy officials estimated a total of 450 students will enroll through grades 7-12 in their first year, with the estimated number rising to 475 students by the fifth year.

A charter school is a school that receives government funding while acting independently of the established school district in which it is located.

Under the state education code, the governing board of the William S. Hart District must hold a public hearing on the provisions of the charter and receive comments from the public regarding the petition no later than 30 days after receiving a petition.

The purpose of the hearing is for the Governing Board to evaluate the level of support for the petition from district teachers, other employees of the District, and parents.

The Governing Board will then make their decision to either deny or grant the charter following their review of the petition and the public hearing. In total the board has 60 days after receiving the petition to make their decision.

Ed. Note: KHTS reached out to AEA leadership for comment, but received no response. This story will be updated if and when AEA officials respond.
