Steve Knight’s Support Of GOP Tax Plan, Voting Record Draws Protest

Congressman Steve Knight’s, R-Santa Clarita, support of the House GOP Tax Plan, as well as his stance on a number of other policies, catalyzed protesters to organize a demonstration at Oak Hills Elementary Friday night.

“There’s a lot of misinformation on what the (GOP tax plan) is going to do, and who it’s going to support, and I don’t think it’s good for America,” said demonstrator Arnie Sisk.

Key components of the GOP tax plan were introduced by Speaker Paul Ryan and other congressional leaders last month, and the bill has already met “some reservations from rank-and-file members,” according to CNN.

Proponents of the legislation have argued that the tax system overhaul would provide a “middle-class tax cut” and provide for “faster economic growth,” according to CNN.

However, Congressional Democrats have stated that the GOP tax bill “did away with key deductions that middle class taxpayers depend on” and that the bill “needs more vetting” before going to a vote, according to reports.

Many of those that participated in the Friday night demonstration at the Santa Clarita Valley demonstration shared the concerns of House Democratic leadership.

“The one unifying story that weaves Simi Valley, Santa Clarita Valley, and the Antelope Valley together is the fact that everybody moved to this district to buy a home, and to send their kids to good schools,” said Brandon Zavala, an event organizer and life-long resident of the district. “Looking at the GOP tax plan and how it would devote state and local tax deductions, as well as the mortgage interest deduction is a direct attack on the identity of this community.”

Congressman Knight released a statement in September praising the GOP Tax Plan framework as a bill which puts “American families first.”

“We are simplifying the tax brackets for everyone so our workers see more money in their paychecks every month for them and their families to enjoy,” Knight said in his September 27 statement. “We are going to reduce the tax rate for all businesses-small and large- to make competition more fair in today’s marketplace and allow American companies to compete globally and bring jobs and resources back home.”

In addition to the signs, chants and protesters specifically targeting the GOP tax plan, some individuals in attendance emphasized that their presence was due to a multitude of other issues they have with Knight’s voting record.

“I’m here because I am just so so tired of having a congressman who does not represent me,” said Valencia resident Peggy Stabile. “(Knight) has voted almost 100 percent with Donald Trump, on every issue the (president) has brought up, and many of these issues don’t represent who our community is, and what our community needs.”

Senate Republicans introduced their own version of a tax system overhaul on Thursday, which varies in certain areas from the House Tax Plan.

House Republicans hope to introduce the GOP Tax Plan for a full chamber vote as early as next week.
