“The trial is a structured process where the facts of a case are presented to a jury in a court of law and they decide if the defendant is guilty or not guilty,” according to the Bail Resource Center & Career Academy.

While the seating locations of the various components of a courtroom may vary, the basic layout of a courtroom is usually the same.

A defendant can expect to see the judge presiding over the case; witnesses to the allegedly criminal activity; the law clerk; a court reporter; the jury; the prosecuting attorney; the defense attorney; the U.S. Marshal or Bailiff; and the seating area for the public.

“A courtroom contains specific seating areas,” states the Bail Resource Center & Career Academy.

The jury sits inside what’s called a jury box, and the defendant will be placed at the defense table alongside their legal representation. The seating area for the public is referred to as the gallery.
