You have just paid your teen’s bail premium, promising they would appear in court next week, but your teen skips town.

What do you do?

Your teen was arrested the day before on a D.U.I. with .08% blood alcohol content charge after they crashed into a light pole, putting their friend who was in the passenger seat in the hospital.

You couldn’t afford to give the court a refundable $100,000 to bail your teen out, so you went to All American Bail Bonds in Santa Clarita and paid a bail agent the premium.

Later, that evening, your teen says they are going to the movies with some friends but never come back home.

Their friends said they skipped town, afraid they would be put in jail after their court date.

“When something like this happens, the bail agent is put on the line for the full bail amount and is responsible for finding the defendant,” said Inessa Chavez, vice president of All American Bail Bonds in Santa Clarita. “We then hire bail recovery agents who track down the defendant and bring them back to appear in court.”

When you post bail to a judge, you receive that money back once the defendant appears in court and completes their case. If the defendant doesn’t appear in court, you don’t get your money back.

It works the same way when you use a bail agent. You pay them the premium, 10 percent of the bail price, and they pay the bail for the defendant. If the defendant skips their court date, the bail agent is out $100,000 or however much the bail price is.

“Our bail agents want to help you,” Chavez said, “But they also need to look out for themselves.”

When a defendant skips their court date, All American Bail Bonds in Santa Clarita or whatever agency paid the bond will offer a reward for the capture of the defendant. That’s when the bail recovery agents come in.

“We have a nearly 100 percent recovery rate at All American Bail Bonds,” Chavez said. “We almost always find the fugitive.”

Once the defendant is captured, they are brought back to jail where they wait until their next court date.
