“To see anyone – whether it’s an individual, a business or a public agency – cut their water use virtually in half is a remarkable accomplishment,” said CLWA General Manager Matt Stone. “The Saugus Union School District has provided an excellent example of the difference that can be made by a concerted effort to use resources more efficiently.”

CLWA Board President Tom Campbell, who presented SUSD leaders with a framed resolution at the Saugus Union School District Board meeting Tuesday night, praised the 15-campus school district for actively seeking to do its part to help address the impacts of California’s historic multi-year drought.

SUSD Superintendent Joan Lucid said the district viewed the conservation effort as an important opportunity to lead by example.

“In order to be seen as a leader in your community you must take action when action is necessary,” Lucid said. “Saugus Union School District saw an opportunity to help alleviate some of our water woes and acted upon it. In doing so we were able to reduce the amount of water we used and conserve for the community.”

Barbara Boliver, SUSD’s Manager of Maintenance and Operations, said the district’s team took an exhaustive look at all 15 campuses, and maximized efficiency with a major emphasis on outdoor water uses, which has been identified by state and local water officials as presenting the greatest opportunity for conservation.
