Advanced Audiology recently announced the acquisition of a specialized machine designed to help audiologists more precisely help patients cope with tinnitus, or ringing in the ears.

Called a Tinnometer, the machine measures the frequency and loudness of the tinnitus by presenting tones in different frequency ranges, much like a hearing test, according to Nola Aronson, a Santa Clarita audiologist and owner of Advanced Audiology.

“It makes it more precise, so then when you go to fit a hearing aid, then you know what frequency you’re trying to match or distract the person from,” she explained.

Hearing aids now have tinnitus features in them that allow the audiologist to program zen music or a variety of types of white to noise to help habituate patients to or nullify the ringing sound.

Aronson noted that 80 percent of her patients at Advanced Audiology are more bothered by their tinnitus than their actual hearing loss, adding that she hopes the new Tinnometer can help, though she can’t make any guarantees.

“There is no cure for tinnitus,” Aronson said. “We used to say, ‘Oh … there’s nothing we can do about it,’ and now we will experiment with this machine and try to help you even more.”

She concluded with a laugh, “What I say is, ring out the new year and ring in the good stuff… As I said, no promises, but there is hope that we can do this.”
