“Right now we’re doing an ad: Does your spouse have selective hearing? Let’s end the debate now — both of you come in for a free hearing check-up and that way you’ll both know and you don’t have to argue anymore. So we save marriages too,” said Nola Aronson of Advanced Audiology with a laugh.

Available to all Santa Clarita Valley residents in addition to feuding married couples, these free hearing screenings are not just for people who have been having hearing problems, according to Aronson.

“You get your eyes checked, you get your teeth checked, you get your heart checked. Why aren’t we checking hearing?” she said. ‘“Hearing is the thing that keeps you in communication with other people.”

Aronson emphasized that having people come in for a routine free hearing screening at Advanced Audiology is not about selling them a hearing aid.

“That’s not our purpose,” she said. “Our purpose is to give you a solution to whatever your problem is, and to let you know where you’re at so when (hearing loss) does happen, you’re aware of it. Then you know what to do. (It’s) just a baseline.”

Oftentimes hearing loss can very subtle, especially if it’s in the high frequency range, which mostly involves the understanding of speech rather than volume.

For instance, letters like “s” and “t” or letter combinations like “ch” or “sh” are in 80 percent of the English language, so if a person has even a mild hearing loss in the high frequency range, they may have difficulty hearing these letters in words.

“You miss one letter in a word, then you don’t understand what is being said because you are still stuck figuring out the word you missed. Therefore you may not notice how many times you ask, ‘What?’, but the other person sure does,” Aronson explained. “So it’s fast, free and easy to get a hearing check-up and find out where you are at. You get your eyes, teeth and heart checked — why not your ears?”
