A Santa Clarita audiologist is raising awareness that hearing aids are not simply commodities to be sold by salespeople to consumers, but are medical tools that must be skillfully programmed to provide hearing loss solutions.

With over-the-counter hearing aids and “amplifiers” rolling out soon in stores nationwide, Nola Aronson from Advanced Audiology noted that it’s more important now than ever to understand why price isn’t everything.
“What people realize when they come to us is that they’re getting a whole education and they’re learning about their hearing,” said Aronson. “And when they have problems, they can come back to us and we can tell them what needs to be done. It’s not a just one-shot process — it’s a long process, if it’s done right.”

A private practice audiologist has at least a master’s degree, and most have a four-year doctorate degree in their field as well, giving them the expertise and skills necessary to help their patients find the best possible solution to their hearing loss, and provide adjustments and service over time as needed.
“Because (hearing aids) are in your ear and they get dirty and they get sweat and moisture … they have to be serviced,” Aronson said. “And your hearing changes and they have to be adjusted correctly.”
Aronson noted that those who choose less expensive alternatives to private practice audiology offices often end up with hearing aids that don’t work correctly.
“What happens is, they get unhappy and then they don’t wear the hearing aids,” she said. “Then they lose out on their hearing and things like that.”
In addition to donating 10 percent of proceeds from her hearing aid sales to nonprofits in Santa Clarita, Aronson also strives to go above and beyond to ensure her patients are happy with their hearing loss solutions both in the short- and long-term.
“I go that extra mile to try to help my patients,” she said. “It’s not all about just money all the time, and that’s what a lot of people think it’s about. I really care whether people hear or not. I care about each person as an individual.”
