Santa Clarita Audiologist Nola Aronson describes how hearing can affect anyone, not just the elderly, and what factors contribute to these issues.

“A lot of times children get fluid behind their ear drums,” explains Aronson. “That causes 30 percent hearing loss a lot of times, which makes you feel like you’re hearing under water.”
She says that while this is treatable, if left for too long at a very young age, children can develop speech impediments. She also adds that by the ages of seven or eight children, could even have learning issues.

“A lot of these learning problems are from the central auditory system,”Aronson says. “Then they’re being diagnosed with this thing called ADHD, which really is over-diagnosed.”
The problem is not only with young children, shares Aronson. Teenagers should consider their hearing as well.
“People don’t realize at a young age how much noise affects their hearing,” according to Aronson. “You don’t end up seeing it until you’re about 50 years old, most of the time. You think that nothing is going to happen.”
Aronson says that age and hearing are not related, it can depend on the environment and what kind of loud noises a person is subject to.
“Although when people do get older they tend to have more hearing loss,” notes Aronson. “(It’s) because of this noise exposure and all these years of build up of your environment and things around you, when you didn’t protect yourself.”
For people who listen to loud music or are musicians, there are custom-made musician ear plugs, says Aronson.
“It protects the ears but you can still hear what people are saying, you can still hear the instruments,” she explains. “Those aren’t very expensive, they’re about $230 a pair, but they’re custom made so they fit the ear and they’re not big.”
Aronson suggests that any age is a good age to get checked but that teenagers should get a baseline test when they are around 16.
“It’s really exciting that there are so many things that we can actually do to help ourselves,” concludes Aronson. “We help ourselves in all kinds of ways; exercise, eating right, but let’s not forget about our ears.”
