Santa Clarita Audiologist: There Is Hope After A Tinnitus Diagnosis

A Santa Clarita audiologist is talking about the variety of different ways to manage tinnitus, or ringing in the ears, noting that it’s no longer seen as something you simply have to live with for the rest of your life.

Nola Aronson from Advanced Audiology estimates that about 80 percent of her patients have tinnitus, and while different things work for different people in terms of management options, she can now help more and more people struggling with tinnitus through new technologies.

“People have a really hard time because there is no cure per say for tinnitus, but there are now lots of different avenues of things that we can do, especially if you do have a hearing loss,” Aronson said.

Advanced Audiology has a special machine called a tinnometer that measures the pitch and loudness of up to four different types of tinnitus, helping Aronson better assess where to start with management options.

“Not everybody has ringing — some people have a seashell noise, some people have a screeching,” she said.

While those without a hearing loss can use phone apps designed to distract them from their tinnitus by playing different sounds, people who have been diagnosed with tinnitus typically have a high frequency hearing loss, according to Aronson.

“If that’s the case, we can help most of the time with a hearing device, with a masking device,” she said. “A lot of times that takes away the sound or lowers the sound when you’re wearing it, but it’s not a cure.”

Though the person will still have tinnitus when they take their hearing or masking device out, Aronson explained that is should lessen over time because you’re habituating yourself to the sound so it doesn’t bother you as much.

“That’s the point of doing it: so it doesn’t affect your life,” Aronson said, “because some people are affected so drastically that they need counselling… What we try to do is focus in on the counselling aspect and also finding a solution, and not telling people, ‘Well you just have to live with it.’ We don’t tell people that anymore because there’s lots of different choices; there’s lots of different things you can do.”
