Seniors often feel isolated due to mobility issues, the death of a spouse or living far away from their children and grandchildren, so the GrandPad is a good “tool” to help combat loneliness, according to Myles McNamara of Comfort Keepers Home Care Santa Clarita.

“There’s tools that are out there to bring people out of depression, out of isolation, getting them back involved in life,” McNamara said. “What I’m seeing with clients is the withdrawal from society that this helps them beat, and it gets them in touch again with family and friends.”

The GrandPad was designed with the senior in mind, and features one-touch features with large buttons on a closed family network that is administered by a loved one.

“There was a little lady named Annie who was 104 years old that was instrumental in the design of this,” McNamara said. “There’s no on and off switch, so once you take it off the docking station or just open the lid, it turns on, and everything is by touch.”

Seniors can make phone/video calls, send audio emails, see family photos, listen to music from their generation, play games, check the weather and more, all with the touch of a button using either their finger or a stylus pen.

“A lot of times (adult children say), ‘Mom will never use that,’” McNamara said. “Well how about giving it a shot? And let’s see the look on her face when she can sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to her grandchild on the other coast because they can do a video call, and grandma and granddaughter can sit right there and see each other — they can tuck them in at night.”

Adult children who may be concerned about their senior loved one being targeted by scammers and spammers can rest assured that the GrandPad operates on a secure, closed network, and the only people with access to that network must be approved by a family admin.

Available through Comfort Keepers Home Care Santa Clarita for the discounted price of $55 per month, the flat fee covers everything needed to use the GrandPad, including insurance to replace it in case it gets lost or broken, according to McNamara.

“It’s an amazing tool to enhance the senior’s involvement with family and friends,” he said. “Like I said, if you just give it a shot and you watch the face of Grandma when she’s calling her grandkids or great grandkids and they can see each other, it’s amazing. It’s an amazing tool.”
