(FROM ORIGINAL POST) An underground high-voltage junction box blew out near Valencia Lanes in Newhall Tuesday, leaving 1091 customers without power, and the eastbound lanes of Lyons Avenue closed down.

An underground high-voltage junction box across the street from Old Orchard Park on Lyons Avenue blew out at approximately 10:15 a.m. according to Southern California Edison technicians.

The explosion was loud enough that several residents heard an audible boom from inside a nearby Smart & Final grocery store.

The blown underground high-voltage junction box resulted in a power outage that left 1091 customers without power, and slowed traffic on Lyons Avenue to a crawl as crews worked to shut down the power.

As of 10:53 a.m. Tuesday morning, Southern California Edison officials estimated that most customers should have power back by 12:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

A fire captain on scene said that the eastbound lanes of Lyons Ave. would be closed down for at least one hour as crews work to fix the blown box.

A KHTS reporter on scene reported shortly before 11 a.m. that the scene was “still live and unsafe.” Residents are encouraged to avoid the area if possible.
