Two Separate Vehicle Fires On I-5 Near Castaic Cause Lane Closures

Two separate vehicle fires along Interstate 5 near Castaic led to temporary lane closures Friday night and again Saturday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The first incident happened around 9:35 p.m. Friday, when a semi-truck caught fire about two miles south of Quail Lake Road, according to CHP officials.

The fire prompted Caltrans to implement a hard closure of the two right lanes on northbound I-5 while crews worked to put out the flames and clear the scene. No injuries were reported.

Crews had to return the following morning after the fire flared up again, according to CHP Officer Carlos Burgos-Lopez.

“There were hot spots that were reigniting Saturday morning and fire had to come out again and put it out a second time,” Burgos-Lopez said.

Officials said crews remained on scene overnight, and the affected lanes were fully reopened around 9:40 a.m. Saturday after the roadway was cleared.

A second, unrelated fire occurred the following night.

Around 9:15 p.m. Saturday, a gray SUV caught fire on northbound Interstate 5 north of Templin Highway, according to CHP Officer Michael Nasir.

CHP blocked the No. 4 lane while emergency crews responded to the vehicle fire. No injuries were reported in that incident.

Both incidents remain under investigation.
