Car Fire Closes Sierra Highway In Canyon Country Early Monday

A car fire following a traffic collision shut down a portion of Sierra Highway in Canyon Country early Monday morning, according to officials.

Los Angeles County Fire Department crews were dispatched to the car fire around 12:37 a.m. near Sierra Highway and Soledad Canyon Road, where a sedan was found fully engulfed in flames, said L.A. County Fire Captain Brian Kight.

Firefighters arrived to find the vehicle completely on fire, with flames also involving a nearby power pole, which was partially knocked down and being supported by two adjacent poles. The fire damaged the pole, prompting concerns about electrical hazards in the area.

Due to the involvement of electrical infrastructure, Southern California Edison was notified at approximately 1:04 a.m. to respond and assess the damage, Kight said.

The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station said the crash resulted in one adult male, believed to be in his late 30s, being transported to a local hospital.

According to Sgt. Muralles with the SCV Sheriff’s Station, alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the crash.

As a result of the crash and downed power pole, the City of Santa Clarita announced the closure of southbound lanes of Sierra Highway near the intersection with Soledad Canyon Road while crews worked to make repairs on Monday.

The crash remains under investigation by the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
