The portion of road, also known as the Cross Valley Connector, will be renamed to the Santa Clarita Veterans Parkway “in honor of the more than 10,000 servicemen and women that reside in Santa Clarita” after a unanimous vote by the city council.

The Cross Valley Connector is an 8.5 mile segment of roadway within the city of Santa Clarita that starts from the intersection of Newhall Ranch Road and Interstate 5, continues through the intersection where Newhall Ranch Road turns into Golden Valley Road, and ends at the intersection of Golden Valley Road and the 14 Freeway.

The agenda item that was originally introduced to the city council recommended the Cross Valley Connector be renamed to the “Santa Clarita Veterans Memorial Parkway.”

Councilwoman Marsha McLean suggested to drop the word ‘memorial’ out of the title “because this isn’t only for those who have passed or died, it’s for all veterans.”

McLean’s suggestion received vocal support from Mayor Bob Kellar and Councilman TimBen Boydston.

The Santa Clarita City Council directed staff to place an item on the agenda for a future meeting to discuss the designation of the Cross Valley Connector in honor of U.S. Military personnel residing in Santa Clarita on Jan. 12.

Two bridges along the Cross Valley Connector have received formal recognition, including the Fallen Warriors Memorial Bridge and the Connie Worden-Roberts Memorial Bridge.

The Fallen Warriors Memorial Bridge was dedicated by the Santa Clarita City Council on May 26, 2011. The bridge connects Newhall Ranch Road and Golden Valley Road and was dedicated in honor of the service men and women who lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to Tuesday’s agenda.

Additionally, an Assembly Concurrent Resolution was adopted on Sept. 15, 2015 to designate the Golden Valley Road Bridge over the 14 Freeway in honor of long-time Santa Clarita resident and community leader Connie Worden-Roberts.
