Providing a major boost of momentum to an already formidable campaign, fundraising reports filed on Friday show Mitchell Englander with a significant financial advantage over his opponents in the race for Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors District 5.
With just under a year before the primary election, the early fundraising numbers are seen as the first real test of a candidate’s viability and strength. Widely viewed as an early frontrunner in the race, Englander’s campaign financials cemented this position, providing an early glimpse of a candidate well known for his deep network of supporters, winning campaigns, and prolific fundraising ability.
“Mitch Englander has earned a solid reputation as a pragmatic problem solver and job creator who strongly advocates for taxpayers and small businesses. It does not surprise me that he has quickly become the leader in fundraising for this important elected position,” said Gary Toebben, President and CEO of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce and 5th District resident.*
A Reserve LAPD Officer and long-time community leader, Mitchell Englander was first elected to the Los Angeles City Council in 2011, representing the communities of Granada Hills, Northridge, Porter Ranch, Chatsworth, North Hills, Reseda, Sherwood Forest, and West Hills. A first time candidate, Englander was elected over a crowded field, winning in the Primary Election with nearly 60% of the vote. He was re-elected in 2015 with 100% of the vote.
An analysis of campaign finance reports shows Englander significantly outpacing his opponents in key categories across the board:
• Outraised his nearest opponent by nearly $100,000 – Englander was the only 5th District candidate who raised over $500,000. He outraised his closest opponent, Kathryn Barger, $580,570.00 to $492,871.79. He also holds a lead of $157,501.33 over Elan Carr and raised more than State Senate Minority Leader Bob Huff and Glendale Mayor Ara Najarian combined.
• Raised more than all candidates for County office – Not only did Englander raise the most among 5th District candidates, he raised more than all 2016 County candidates, including incumbent Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, incumbent District Attorney Jackie Lacey, and 4th District candidate Janice Hahn.
• Significant cash-on-hand advantage – One of the most important indicators of the health of a campaign, Englander holds a near six-figure lead or more in cash-on-hand over all of the candidates in the field.
• Englander took zero loans – Underscoring his deep network of supporters, Englander reached his total without taking loans, while Barger and Huff each took out $20,000 loans to bolster their financials.
• Raised significantly more in less time – In just ten weeks, Englander outraised all of his opponents. By contrast, Carr, Huff, and Barger all had 50% more time to raise funds than Englander in this reporting period.
“Mitch has a record of experience, network of support, and proven success at the ballot box that is unmatched,” said Josh Pulliam, lead strategist and consultant to the Englander campaign. “This report affirms that and clearly puts Mitchell Englander in the driver’s seat. We have put together a winning campaign and look forward to the year ahead.”
