A club at College of the Canyons aims to raise awareness about the dangers of human trafficking through volunteer work and school partnerships.
Our People, Our Fight COC is a student-led club that raises awareness about human trafficking through education, events, and film screenings. The club also works with the college’s on-campus human trafficking task force, according to a representative for COC clubs.
“It can happen to everybody,” said Chase Longan, President of Our People, Our Fight. “Regardless if we’re seeing it, or we’re the one’s dealing with it, We all can be a target of trafficking if we’re not careful.”
Members of the club also volunteered alongside the Sheriff’s Human trafficking division to ensure that the hotels and motels in Castaic were in compliance with California Civil Code 52.6, which requires businesses to display signage that lists resources for reporting the crime.
In California, over a thousand cases of human trafficking were reported in 2023, with the majority of the cases being adults.
“When it’s happening in your own backyard, that should really make you uncomfortable,” said Longan. “Regardless if we’re seeing it, or we’re the ones dealing with it. We’re all affected, and we all can be a target of trafficking .”
Our People, Our Fight COC is scheduled to have an initial meeting on September 3 at 4:30 p.m. on the Valencia campus in Hasley Hall, room 235 and is open to students interested in the club. The club is also set to be at COC’s club fest on September 18th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
