Deputies Read To Oak Hills Elementary Students During ‘Read Across America’ Week (VIDEO)

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s deputies read to Oak Hills Elementary School Students in Stevenson Ranch throughout the week during “Read Across America.”

Read Across America is a nationwide celebration of reading and it started with Dr. Seuss and each year around Dr. Suess’s Birthday we celebrate a week long encouragement of reading for students.

For the last several years, Oak Hills Elementary tries to go outside the scoop and look to prominent community members such as city council members, firefighters and sheriffs deputies to come and read to the kids.

“The kids have been very excited, but each grade level has had different questions that they’ve gotten to ask the deputies and they just have been really great about how they contribute to our community,” said Maria Chittum, library media technician for Oak Hills Elementary.

This year, Oak Hills Elementary had the opportunity throughout the week to hear from deputies about the importance of reading and education.

Deputy Hook, who graduated from West Ranch High School in 2014 had the opportunity to read to Oak Hills Elementary School third graders.

The kids were able to listen to ‘Ricky the rock who couldn’t Roll’ which is a story about friendship and kindness which Hook emphasised to the kids that they are important virtues.

“It’s important that the kids these days read because like I told them, learn to read and then read to learn. We were all in their shoes and I just see the future in them,” said Deputy Hook.
