Boots & Badges Chili Cook-Off Serves Up Delicious Chili For A Worthy Cause

This year, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) partnered with Special Olympics of Southern California to form the Boots & Badges Chili Cook-Off, with all proceeds going to the Special Olympics programs.

The Boots & Badges Chili Cook-Off took over the Jack Bones Equestrian Center on Saturday in Castaic with lots of tasty chili and enjoyable activities.

“We’ve been doing this for 40 years now, and it’s been a great partnership. The people were putting on this event for our team champions, who are Olympians. It’s a moment for us to recognize how hard they work and inspire us,” said Hugo Macias, Assistant Sheriff for the LASD Custody Operations.

Over 20 themed chili booths were featured, allowing guests to sample a variety of unique chili recipes. Many were decorated with a western theme, with some out-of-the-box themes such as “Despicable Me” and “Talladega Nights.”

All proceeds from the chili cook-off benefit the Special Olympics of Southern California with their mission of offering inclusive sports programs for people with disabilities.

“We’re looking for more volunteers to help out with our competitions as well as getting involved coaching, which is a very impactful role. We need more willing volunteers to give our athletes the opportunity to compete and shine,” said Travis Bannerman, Manager of Volunteer Services for the Santa Clarita Special Olympics.

Beyond the chili booths, the event also featured vendors offering handmade goods, food, and beverages.

A kids’ corner allowed little ones to play sports games and arts and crafts. Next to it, BFF Mobile Petting Zoo brought an array of different animals to be pet, such as chickens, goats, bunnies, and an alpaca.
