Los Angeles County Fire and Sheriff’s personnel are under self-quarantine after being exposed to a patient who later died from COVID-19, also known as the coronavirus, officials said Thursday.

Like much of the world, the Los Angeles County Fire and Sheriff’s Departments are adapting to the challenges caused by the recent outbreak of coronavirus, according to a statement from officials with the County.

On March 9, Los Angeles County Fire and Sheriff’s Department personnel responded to reports of a patient in cardiac arrest, according to officials.

“They provided excellent patient care and managed to resuscitate and transport the patient to a local area hospital, where unfortunately, the patient later passed away,” said Sean Ferguson, a spokesperson with the Fire Department. “Upon hospital biopsy, it was discovered the patient had COVID-19.”

Although the three LASD personnel and five firefighters have not shown any symptoms for the coronavirus, they were sent home to follow self-quarantine procedures as outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention out of “an abundance of caution,” according to officials.

“The Los Angeles County Fire Department has been following all Department of Public Health guidelines and will continue to do so moving forward in an effort to protect our employees and members of the public,” Ferguson said.

First responders are working with the Department of Public Health to assess if COVID-19 testing of department personnel is required, according to officials.

Officials are encouraging personnel and the public to stay at home if they feel ill, and are working closely with community members and healthcare partners to ensure the safety of residents.
