‘Druggies’, ‘drug addicts’, ‘substance use disorders’, ‘doper’, ‘drug abuser’, etc. several times in our daily lives, we hear such terms being used on news channels, radios, in newspaper articles, community meetings, and social welfare committees.
But, one can never imagine what it really feels like being a drug or alcohol addict.
The overpowering cravings drive a person crazy; not just mentally, but also take a toll on their physical health. Moreover, a complete recovery from such substance-abuse is not just difficult, but an intimidating as well.

Be it personally for the patients (or the addicts) themselves, or for their families and the surrounding societies, drugs and alcohol recovery is the urgent survival need. At the same time, it is equally important to understand that there is no one-size-fit solution or list of steps for drug and alcohol addicts to overcome their addiction. The degree of craving and extent of its aftereffects significantly differs from case to case. In line goes the process of recovery. Several medical institutes provide world class recovery treatment across the globe. They master the art and science of transforming the mind and body of the affected individual in the most certified and tested ways.
After a rigorous research, we have pinned down the following steps that definitely help (if not guarantee) in completely recovering from drug and alcohol addiction:
- Being aware and acknowledging details: A complete examination of the patient must be the first and the foremost step of the recovery process. Factors such as age, history of drug use, gender, psychological status and type of drug intake are some key factors which must be taken into consideration before going for treatment.
- A Patient Understands: The patient himself/herself must have a complete understanding of their disease, disorder, and probable health effects associated with drug/alcohol abuse. This will not only prepare the patient to deal with the recovery process, but ignite their own willingness to contribute actively towards getting healthy and sober again.
- Recognizing the vicious circle of one’s affection: Identify and then discuss with the patient the list of people who are greatly suffering from physical and mental issues as a result of drug/alcohol abuse. This could include friends, immediate family members, relatives, neighbors, locality members, etc. Give the patient a valid reason to re-think about his choices, behavior and the kind of lifestyle he/she wants to live.
- Educate: Enlighten the patient as well as the ones in direct contact with them during the recovery process about the drugs, their health impacts, difficulties to be faced during rehab treatment, and associated issues, along with the importance of physical, mental, and emotional recovery.
- Choose the right treatment: Selecting the right recovery program is of utmost importance to be successful. Although many people attempt to stay local to where they regularly live, it can be surprisingly beneficial to travel for treatment. Going to a new, fresh environment can provide a new perspective on life and an easier ability to overcome your addiction. Getting treatment in Florida if you’re from the Northeast or California if you’re from the Pacific Northwest, for instance, are both options that should be strongly considered.
- Recover without Relapse: Do not forget that Relapse (or deteriorate after a period of improvement), is still a probability. Remain actively involved with the patient even after the completion of the treatment and look into their health, physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Have questions in mind? Let them flow! You might end up helping out someone in dire need!
