To improve safety for all road users, a new app is being tested in Santa Clarita that allows cyclists to be detected in advance of intersections. The GiveMeGreen! App can provide greater information about the presence of bikes at these potentially hazardous spots, so benefiting both motorists and cyclists. As well as supporting initiatives like this, educating road users on safety is a priority for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. A recent one day operation resulted in 34 citations for dangerous violations committed by motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, showing how proactive campaigns can help improve safety on the roads.
Reminders To Protect Against The Unexpected
Of course, some incidents resulting in injury or damage to a vehicle are beyond a driver’s control, no matter how safely they drive. This is why it’s important to have comprehensive cover to protect against unforeseen circumstances. On just one day in February this year, torrential rain and heavy winds caused dangerous conditions on the roads, resulting in 70 emergency calls reporting traffic collisions. However, drivers were also kept informed by the Sheriff’s Station about natural hazards such as trees falling on top of cars, and the rather more unusual risk of vehicles being damaged by an unsecured trampoline.
Campaigns Keep Young People Out Of Danger
During the warmer summer weather, road safety is a concern as more children play outside and families take a drive out to make the most of all that the city and the surrounding area has to offer. The HeadsUp! Campaign encourages families to talk about road safety with kids to ensure they stay safe and enjoy their summer break. Aimed at young drivers in particular, the annual White Ribbon Campaign commemorates teenagers killed in road accidents, and serves as an effective reminder to avoid driving recklessly or while impaired.
Educational Programs For Safe Driving
The Newhall Area of the California Highway Patrol is dedicated to improving road safety, and educational programs help reduce the number of traffic collisions that cause fatalities and injuries to motorists driving through the area. Car Fit helps senior drivers ensure that their cars are properly adjusted to suit them and protect them in case of an accident. For new teenage drivers accompanied by their parents, Start Smart classes address issues such as distracted driving, speeding and collision avoidance.
As drivers and other road users look forward to a summer of enjoying days out in the area, local campaigns and programs act as powerful reminders to drive safely and stay alert on the roads.
