6 Tips For Biking In The Snow

Many cycling enthusiasts mistakenly believe the approach of winter means they will need to put their bikes in storage until the spring. Riding a bike over the snow-covered ground will present riders with a particular set of challenges. However, you can enjoy your bicycle in the winter months as much as any other time of the year if you keep a few tips in mind.

Dress for the Occasion

The first tip for riding your bike in winter conditions is one you’ll want to make sure you do before you leave your home. You should choose winter cycling gear that will allow you to enjoy your ride while protecting you against the snow and other elements of winter.

Your body loses most of its heat through the head. A head covering under your helmet should be enough to protect against this risk. Gloves, an extra pair of socks, and a moisture-resistant jacket will also prove helpful.

Check Tire Pressure

Tire pressure is a major faction for retaining traction when bike riding in the snow. You will do yourself a favor if you decrease the air pressure in your tires a bit.

Tires with lower air pressure will enjoy better shock absorption and allow a larger area of the tire to make contact with the ground while you are riding. You do not have to worry about the lower tire pressure resulting in a blowout since most of the threats to your tire are probably under a layer of snow.

Don’t Fear the Slide

Your bike will slide a little when the snow is deep. The movement is a bit like skating on ice, but do not let this scare you into giving up on your bike ride. You may feel the sensation of sliding the most when you venture away from the center of a trail with elevation at the sides.

When this happens, gravity will sometimes cause your bike to slide toward more level ground. You can ride more toward the center of a trail to start with to avoid this sliding motion. However, the snow might make it difficult for you to know where the low point of a trail lies.

Use Flat Pedals

You may find it difficult to return your cleat to a conventional pedal after sticking your foot into the snow to stop your bike. Flat pedals will enhance the safety of your ride and allow you to wear the winter boots with which you are most comfortable.

Stay Hydrated

It is a good idea to drink plenty of water or other healthy fluids before leaving for a bike ride in the winter months. This precaution is necessary because dehydration is the main contributor to frostbite. You may also want to pack a bit of warm water with you for your ride.

The Takeaway

Biking enthusiasts do not need to give up their hobby just because there is snow on the ground. Staying mindful of the six tips above will allow you to have as much fun riding your bike when it is snowing as you will at any other time of the year.

Prepare for Crashes

The equipment and level of fitness needed to bike in the winter months will not pose much of a challenge to regular bike riders. However, the skill set necessary to ride your bike in the snow may take a little time to master.

One important skill is learning to stay loose and calm on descents that cause you to feel you are not in total control of your bike. If you are tense when you travel these declines, you increase the likelihood of losing control of the bike.

Keep in mind that a fall or two is the norm at the beginning, and the snow will only act as a cushion for your fall. If you suffer an injury while riding your bike on a trail or property that should have been better maintained, you should reach out to a lawyer. After a crash, take these steps:

  • Call the police
  • Take photos of the scene and any injuries
  • Get the driver’s and witnesses’ contact information
  • Visit a doctor

According to one Manassas bike accident attorney, a bicycle accident can turn your life upside-down in an instant, and unfortunately, a part of your recovery is going to be figuring out how to pay for it. When someone else’s negligence caused your accident, it is your right to hold them financially accountable.
