Contrary to popular belief, the rates for residential and business electricity are not quite the same. Why? One may ask – It is due to a lot of factors, including taxes and the discounts given by energy-providing businesses to businesses that require energy in large amounts.
Another factor to take into consideration is also that businesses differ greatly from residential areas, and the way they require and consume countless units of energy in a very consistent and continuous manner is also to be analyzed as residential areas are usually quite the opposite.
Discounts
To some businesses, energy providers give out discounts, and there is a very simple and reasonable logic behind this concept which includes and focuses on the fact that businesses that require large amounts of consistent energy – sign contracts for a rather elaborate period of time and purchase energy in bulk and similar to most things that are bought in bulk, bulk buying comes with discounts.
Lucky for businesses who give out such discounts, they do not enter a state of loss but, as a matter of fact, can actually make up for the discount way past the benchmark. This lowers business electricity rates while simultaneously keeping electricity providers at a profit.
Taxes
Taxes are bad news for businesses as it is indefinitely to their means – having to pay more money. The way the government taxes residencies is drastically different from the way businesses (especially large businesses) are taxed.
This concept reflects heavily in bills, including electric ones, where large businesses have to pay a much higher percentage of tax compared to residential areas where families are not taxed as heavily.
Types of Plans
Another thing that creates differences between both the electric rates includes the types of plans offered to both parties. The types of plans offered to residential colonies are quite different from the type of plans offered to businesses.
Families usually get plans that help them save money; the same cannot be said about businesses unless they are willing to buy in bulk. Then a drastic difference between the functions carried out by a normal home and a business.
Businesses also are required to pay more as they need a constant flow of energy at all times to carry out their operations consistently and effectively.
Not only do they need this constant flow, but this flow needs to be in large amounts for businesses operating with heavy machinery, and this, in turn, results in businesses paying a lot more for electricity than residential places are supposed to.
Timing
Another highly important factor to take note of is the timing! It is not an uncommon concept – the concept that elaborates on how at specific hours, the rate of the cost of electricity per unit goes evidently higher, and most households shut off their high-duty appliances to save money.
But unfortunately, businesses cannot afford to shut off their electrical appliances to save money as it would ultimately put their operations at hold and jeopardize their business.
All in all, the rates of electricity per unit vary from business to business and especially from business to household and is quite hard to be compared as businesses are running on a very high scale level with consistency and residential areas are not the same because they only have to cater to a small number of people at any given moment.
