Health Improvement Via Time Management

Time is gold, as the old adage says.

Have you ever stopped to think if you have been maximizing the use of your daily working hours to actual productivity?

A lot of us have aspirations that direct the way we lead our lives. Some of these plans are for the long term, and yet some can simply be accomplishing tasks in our day-to-day life.

In a shocking study by the University of Scranton, it was found that only 8% of people are able to meet their New Year’s Resolutions. It begs the question if it is truly reasonable to set goals if most of us would not achieve them anyway.

The secret lies in the effective use of the time we have daily.

Are you able to get enough sleep?

We are only granted 24 hours every day. A lot of healthy adults are able to catch 8 hours of sleep every night, which translates to about a third of their lives devoted to rest. Sleeping is undoubtedly essential to great mental health but good sleeping habits are not always dictated by quantity. In fact, researchers from Johns Hopkins even found that fewer hours of uninterrupted sleeping are still much better than longer hours that are disrupted through the night.

You have probably referred to your “body clock” at some point in time. This is the more familiar way we speak of our circadian rhythm which is the 24-hour cycle of our daily activities, involving sleeping, eating, or working. But the circadian rhythm is just one of the four biological rhythms we should be aware of to address successful time management.

What are ultradian rhythms?

Ultradian rhythm is the classification we refer to when the cycle is shorter than a day but not less than an hour. A good understanding of your own ultradian rhythm can lead to great productivity for individual tasks.

One example of ultradian rhythm is Rapid Eye Movement (REM) discovered by Nathaniel Kleitman, a researcher who devoted much of his life to studying how we sleep. He found that we have periods of about 90 minutes where we present high-frequency activity in our brains alternating with lower frequencies of activity. This happens both when we are asleep or awake during the day. This means that it is a good idea to take necessary breaks in between working hours so that we could maximize our one-and-a-half hour cycle of productive brain activity.

It isn’t necessary to put ourselves on timers throughout the day. This might even lead us to more stress as we hang on to all the little details. What we recommend is to listen to our own bodies. Our body will tell us when we are tired, and we must always pay attention. Working for long hours at a time can eventually lead to burnout, which is not the wisest strategy to take.

Tuning in to our ultradian rhythms will ultimately lead us to lead more balanced lives, and this might even be the real secret to success.
