Taking Care Of Teens During The Stay-At-Home Order

The coronavirus pandemic is sweeping across this country and presenting Americans with an unprecedented, challenging situation. It’s causing uncertainty and is creating stress and anxiety in everyone. Many people are panicking and behaving irrationally. Schools and many businesses have closed for an undetermined amount of time.

As a result, drastic measures have been implemented such as quarantine and social distancing guidelines. Millions of children and teenagers are confined to their homes with their social interactions limited. Parents are finding themselves in the position of providing full-time care for these kids at home. Because schools are closed, parents are now responsible for educating their students. This places an extra burden on these already overwhelmed parents. They want to ensure that their kids stay healthy and safe by avoiding the perils of this disease by remaining confined at home.

Healthy Body and Mind

Teens may try to hide their feelings and actions from their parents, which only intensifies their stress. Many teens are not mature enough to deal with so many changes that have occurred in their lives in such a short time. They may choose to isolate themselves further from their family and may spend endless hours in their room. Some make seek solace and comfort by turning to drugs or alcohol. If a teen is unable to maintain emotional stability, and parents discover that they are having difficulty coping on their own, it is time to seek help. Finding substance abuse treatment for teenagers in California and other states under stay-at-home orders is something to consider. These facilities have made adjustments in order to continue serving their communities during the pandemic.

Coping Strategies for Parents and Teen

Many parents are finding it extremely difficult to cope with the challenges of staying at home and being isolated from society. Teenagers are no different. They feel isolated, anxious, and alone. Even though parents encourage them to eat properly and get enough sleep, many turn to unhealthy habits instead. Parents should enlist a teenager’s assistance in planning and preparing meals they enjoy. This is a way to involve them in everyday activities in the home and provides an outlet for excess energy. This forced isolation gives families the opportunity to get closer to their teens and encourages better communication. It gives parents more time to listen to their teen’s concerns and try to alleviate their fears.

Family Activities

Mobile devices are constant companions for teens. They are rarely without them. That allows them to stay in touch with friends and extended family through calls, texts, and emails but should be limited. Many families spend a great amount of time on the internet and not much interacting with each other. Being at home together without much outside contact provides a great opportunity for families to participate together in different activities. Even though teens and parents prefer different genres of movies and videos, it might be a good time to plan a family movie night. Teens choose the movies one night and the parents the next.

Another long-forgotten activity for families is playing board games. This stay-at-home time is a good time to reintroduce classic board games. Competitive board games provide hours of entertainment and a brief escape from reality. With limited travel, plan a picnic or cookout in the backyard. A little imagination and creativity can help relieve the boredom for teens and help turn a negative attitude into a positive one.
